Making your own Mehndi stage/backdrop

Assalaamualikum!

I have just signed up to this forum although I have been reading posts for a while here. You guys seem really friendly and helpful so I am hoping you can suggest some ideas and point me in the right direction.

A friend of mine is getting married in August inshAllah and has asked me design and setup a backdrop for her Mehndi, obviously she is on a budget and doesn’t want to spend on a professional stage decorator.

The function will be in a small hall and she is just looking for something nice and simple to create a focus point where she will be seated.

Any ideas on how i can go about this? any suggestions of what i could to make a plain wall look fancy, and something which will stay up?.. anyone attempted their own stage/backdrop before?

Re: Making your own Mehndi stage/backdrop

hey jus do a search on mendhi's im sure theres loads of threads on it.
but heres some ideas using fabric or duppatas to decorate, floaty candles, mendi thaals
good luck!

I’m not an expert, but I would take pretty fabric, drape and staple it to a backdrop…you could even combine fabrics, like net and satin. See if you can rent columns or poles and run flowers along them. For a mehndi, people generally get things like dhols and gao takias (see this link, they are like roll cushions Scylax Online - The World’s Premier Destination for Exclusive Gifts and Handicrafts ) for decoration.

Maybe a good first step would be to decide on a color scheme…you might get lucky and find that things are still on sale from Christmas and you can find things in colors like green and gold. Doing this would make it easier to decide on fabrics, flowers, and little things to decorate mehndi trays like candles.

Re: Making your own Mehndi stage/backdrop

Thanks guys!..Im not too worried about the accessories..its just the more technical aspect of getting the fabrics on the wall..is this done directly or use some type of board of something

I saw them set up a stage and a mandap for a few weddings in town (we were taking bridesmaid pics around the mandap and so forth). anyhow they used rods and put it together kinda like when you're setting up a tent. they hung the material from teh rods like curtains, arranged it the way they wanted it, added some hanging flowers or lights or those desi hanging decoations with mirrors and jewels and ta-da it was done. for my friend's nikka we just hung up some nice material against the wall of the stage (normally stages are not right against a wall but in this case it was luckily) and threw up nice fabrics, cascaded some from the light fixture in the center of the room and that was that.

however the rod thing is helpful, maybe you can rent one from a decorating company and have them set it up for you and you use your own fabrics and such?

Re: Making your own Mehndi stage/backdrop

Hunnie, that was really useful I suppose the rod will work best because it will mean i can hang the fabric like a curtain, without nailing anything. yey!!..

Thanks! :)

Re: Making your own Mehndi stage/backdrop

You can rent pipe and drape from a party rental company. I inquired about it from some companies and I believe they provide the curtain material and also extra material for swagging if need be. You can assemble it yourself and apparently its quite easy (just a matter of locking the pieces of the pipes).

Pipe & Drape - Georgia Stage, Inc.

then you can add dupattas on the top and sides, anywhere you want. Or even flowers.

Just a suggestion.
