I made a tiny little crochet flower that i will attach on to a headband I made for my friends daughter .. I want to stiffen up that rose , its too soft right now .. should I starch it? or is there any other way to achieve the stiffness?
I've tried starching and it does work for some things but if I understand what you are trying to do then it won't work for this application.
I'd get the thin wire that is used in jewellery making to give the petals the body and structure that you are looking for. It will be easy to feed it through the stitches and keep it hidden......just like wired-ribbon.
thanks so much Muzna , question , does starch work nicely on cup mats? a friend used felt at the back of the cup mats , I dont have felt at home so thought i will just starch them up .. what do you think?
Thanks for the wire suggestion, I am thinking of wrapping the wire first in a thin cloth or crepe paper and do the Crochet around the wire .. I dunno , its so confusing , if I try to insert the wire into the flower now, it can prove to be slightly unsafe technically .. what if while wearing the head band , the little girl, knocks her finger against the sharp ends of the wire
you can also try using the wire that is used for floral design…it is already wrapped.
but if you get the wire that is used for jewellery design then you won’t have issue with poking etc cuz its made for that purpose. all you will need to do is ensure that the trimmed ends of the wire are well covered by your crochet work.
pictures please...would love to make one for my niece
and cbee can you please guide someone like me who does not the abc of crochet...how should i start as a beginner...dont even know what tools and threads are used for this art?
the best way to learn to crochet is by doing simple projects like pot holders and scarves. this way you learn to hold the hook and yarn and become accustomed to the tension that is required for consistency.
here’s a good video that will help you get started:
once you learn the basics and know how to read patterns (i.e. sc, dc, etc) it will be much easier for you to do the doilies and projects that require fine threads.
As a start , get a crochet hook .. I have one that my mom got me ages ago .. its got a hook on both sides and one is size 3 and the other one is size 5 ..
I think mom got it from Pakistan .. but they are readily available everywhere.
Then start practicing the basic chain stitch. It will take some time before you get used to this stuff .
My very first crochet project was a little purse that i did with the basic chain stitch.. It took some time to get the tension right .. but I was doing well by the end of the project.
Then you can start on learning secondary stitches like double crocket and tripple crochet . And , finally you can learn to do the more complicated stitches like Crocodile Stitch / waffle stitch etc etc ..
Once you learn the basic stitches , you will be able to follow alot of video's available on youtube ..
saw the video you posted....very helpful indeed.....i am definitely going to follow it once i get my hands on the stuff i need for crocheting
Cbee, yes as you and muzna have suggested i will start off with basics first which will take quite some time coz i am quite nikammi when it comes to sewing , embroidery, knitting etc....but now i think its high time that i start learning something creative....please do share when you are done with your head band:) and thanks :)
thanks Maktoob, Crochet is easy , you cant be more nikami then me I can promise you that so going by that , it took me no more then 3-4 days to get the basic chain stitch right .. infact the only thing I was struggled with was holding the thread properly coz it kept getting loose between my fingers .. so that was slight practice needed .. the chain itself is really easy ..
So yeah good luck and get on it , crocheting is so much fun ..
