Having him tell you the story is caller a retelling and it’s a good literary development strategy for kids. If he’s really young to where recalling a story from the previous year may be hard, use a smaller gap b/w the retellings..maybe a gap of a few days, etc.

He’s almost 7, I don’t know if that’s too young but I know he remembers at least some of them because I’ve heard him tell them to his younger brother on 5 months (He has high expectations from him )
