Making Copies of DVDs

hi there,

anyone know of a relative easy way of making a copy of a DVD? is there a special DVD burner that is required, or could you burn one using a CD burner? (the logical answer would probably be that you would need a DVD burner, but i’m hoping there’s some way you could go around that)

any help would be great!

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

If you can rip it to under 700 then you can fit it on a CD so you dont need a DVD burner.

So first logical step would be find a software that rips DVDs into a format that is either 700 or below

I used DVD shrink but it didnt make any difference to the size, or maybe i wasnt paying attention.

I know there is stuff available but duno anything bout it.
This indian torrent site i visit have full indian movies avaiable to upload all under 700 with good quality
So anyone have any knowldge bout such stuff??

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

LB the indian movies you mentioned are compressed using various formats, most popular is AVI format, without loosing much of picture quality...etc

SS I think DVD shrink is a good software, the question is do you want to play that dvd in a dvd player or just to burn contents of DVD(movie) onto CD?

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

acrobi, im not really good at such stuff myself. Thats why I asked.

So rip the movie using DVD shrink then compress it??
What do you compress it with??

I sometimes rip BB movies for the girls so they can watch it later on thats why im asking.

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

LB if you are talking about the movies that you download from other site, I would recommend using Nero and I would recommend making a dvd rather than cd but like you said rip the movies for later use there is one software to copy DVD to CD, its DVD Wizard Pro, you can probablly find many other softwares like that and the software itself rip and encode them but it will take a long time to make a cd.

I personally use Nero but make a DVD on a DVD-RW and so far I haven't had any problem at all (such as this movie works and this doesn't) for both desi and english movies, I am already on to MI 3 :D ahem :D

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

Naaa not the movies that you download.
I find the ones that are already compressed rather then the ones that are sitting at 3-4 gigs. Thats indian movies.

The english ones the boys download them for me, and i've got vlc plus media classic all coded so not worried bout 'em.

Im talking bout ripping movies off DVDs that i rent from BlockBuster.
Sometimes they are only one nighters and i dont get a chance to watch 'em
I tried ripping one and it ended up being around 3 gigs. which sucks.
I'd rather fit around 3 movies on one DVD. My DVD player plays most formats so not worried bout the format.

I'd probably be looking for compressing software.
Which ones are good??

I dun care bout MI3, waiting for XM3. Like Omigod Wolverine wohoooo

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

aha well then you need something like DVD -to- Avi software you can google or you can always find that via google or you can go to “other” sites to have a look, I haven’t compressed movies so I dont have a first hand experience of that but there are some other softwares out there:

XDVDcopy’
DVD ripper
one of my friend gave me this website address http://www.dvdtox.com/ you can always search for these softwares and vola

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

I never tried ripping DVDs myself but most of the ripped videos available for dowload use DivX (and almost all DVD players can play DivX movies). You can find more info at

divx.com/divx/create/divxpro/

Hope this helps

Re: Making Copies of DVDs

The compression happens when you are ripping the DVD. In DVD Shrink when you start making a backup there's a Compression section on the right. You can select individual items in the DVD Structure side and change the setting for the compression from Automatic to Custom and increase the compression to get the desired file size. Unfortunately i think you can only go down to 50 %.

You could possibly accomplish this by using DVD to VCD kinda software and split up the movies into multiple CD's.
