Making a suit of your choice from scratch

so I have a question to the ladies of the forum here and mostly the GS designers.

Lets say you see a pic of an outfit on the internet that you like and want to get a replica made, how do you go from there ?

  • do u get a colour printed of the pic, especially the kaam, thats not sometime obvious. what about those who dont have a colour printer, which method do u use to let the kaam waala know, how the kaam on the suit be.

Do u make a sketch on a piece of paper. .. or just explain it ??

Second question, what is your process of getting a suit done, do u have to buy the material, like the daagas, the kaam material and give them to the kaam waala or do you just explain the material type and colours and they get it for you ?

lastly, the designing of the suit, when u give it to a tailor, how do u explain the design on the suit, do u show a pic or u sketch it on a paper ? how important is it here to give the type of information, like u have to ensure that the daaarzi gets the facts right and doesnt make mistakes that will destroy the suit.

in summary my question is, what is the best way to get a suit made from scratch of a pic u have seen on the net ???

Re: Making a suit of your choice from scratch

***I would recommend to get the pic printed in colour printed of the pic. You can print it yourself or get it printed from a shop.

Find the original designer if you can. Inquire about about the price, type of kaam and materials used.

Hunt for more pics (the popular outfits are mostly showcased in fashion shows).

Show the kaam wala the pic, they know the types of work and can show samples. Select the type of work you want and make the karigaar draw the pic by himself. Keep a copy as well so that he can't say 'aap ney aisa hi bataya tha', if he, God forbid!, goofs up the kaam.

You just need to buy the fabric/satin pattis/dupatta. The crystals, dhagaas and other embellishments are the karigars/designers headache. They generally don't buy the fabric but are excellent in colour combinations if you provide a different coloured fabric that is not showcased in the pic.

Just take the finished outfit to the darzi and show him both the pic and the finished outfit. State your measurements clearly and precisely and ask him to draw the final sketch on piece of paper.

Leave the rest to God! Hopefully everything would work out well. ***

Oh Shehnai has got it all covered there. don't have much to add, except that ask the kaarigar to get a small piece of work done as a sample first, and take a picture of that too :)

Re: Making a suit of your choice from scratch

Thanks for the info!

what if we dont print out a copy, but show a pic, like on a digital camera, do u think they can still produce the same suit.

Re: Making a suit of your choice from scratch

Saadia, in my experience they do the best job of copying (other than having the original there) when they have a full sized magazine picture of the outfit to copy. From an actual magazine, not a zoomed in print out of a small digital picture. They will refer to the picture for everything, the cuts, the layout of the kaam and the kaam pattern, so you physically need to leave something with them.

If you are printing out a smallish picture from something you have on your computer, the best thing to do is draw your own sketch as well to accompany it clearly showing the main components, such as the cut, the neckline style, the sleeves style, kaam placement. If you can annotate it, it will help as well, so when you talk through it with the karigaar you won't forget anything.
If you don't know what sort of kaam is done, ask for their opinion and get them to show you some examples of the kind of kaam they will likely do and then you can go from there, making your own suggestions. Make sure they write everything that is decided down! You really need to be specific, as an example, I once showed a pic where it was a ambiguous what the cut was and I didn't specify, so the resulting outfit was more like kameez with open sides instead of dress like with closed sides.

pm me your email and I can show you a few examples :)

Re: Making a suit of your choice from scratch

***^Agree with stoppit. Just a pic saved in a small screened digital camera would not solve the problem. They do need a full sized high resolution pic which they further see through a magnifying glass before tracing/copying the design.

@stoppit: I need to see those examples as well. Kindly send them to me to in you can. ***
