Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags ...

So Piping bags are a bit expensive to get … so I havebeen thinking of using the ordinary plastic bags ( the carrier bags that come with the day to day shopping )

All you experts , please tell me if that will work out well? If I insert a nozzle through a corner and then use it as a piping bag .. would it work?

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags ...

I've done that. In my early baking days.

I used a plastic bag, the one with a slightly harder/firmer material ( like the ones in which you get cereals). I didn't even use a nozzle. I just made a small hole from one end with a scissor, put in some whipped cream and decorated my cake with it.

Thanks for the input Hadeel .I fully intend to make some complicated decorations and have got a few good nozzles too … hence asking if i can use the ordinary plastic bags ..:hmmm:

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags …

Yeah why not. You can definitely give it a try.

Use a bag with this sorta material.

I don’t think ordinary bags would work, surely they would end up splitting?

I use these one: 50 ‘Get A Grip’ Non-Slip Disposable Piping Bags | Lakeland They are so easy to use, u just cut the ends to what ever size u want, plus they’re really good quality and perfect for beginners. They are disposable but u can use them a good few times before u throw them away.

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags ...

zip log would work

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags ...

CB i tried and failed. I solved the issue.by buying reusable bags as they work out wconimcally and environmentally better. I picked up one up off amazon for £3.00.

On the American cooking shows, they suggest using zip loc FREEZER bags. They're a good enough texture that they won't tear or crack as you twist up the bag to squeeze out the piping. You can wash and reuse the bag many times too. Just snip a tiny corner off to either insert a nozzle, or just use as is.

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags ...

I often use a zip lock freezer bag if I don't have any disposable bags in. The problem with a generic plastic carrier bag is that the materials it has in it will not be food safe.

£8.99 for 50 disposable piping bags tht will last like FOREVER; how is tht so expensive? Seriously people, allow the plastic bags please, I'm a student and I can afford them so no excuses. Trust me, u wont be disappointed.

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags …

Piping syringes are less messy than the bags … Here is place in surrey that does them, but Tesco also do them for £20 for a full chrome set.

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags ...

Syringes don't give you the smooth flow you need for good icing and more complicated designs.

The get a grip ones have really good reviews. If you plan on doing a lot of baking, it's really not that expensive.

Re: Making a piping bag out of ordinary Shopping bags …

I bought some of these for my sister back in 2007 and she still uses them.. she bakes and decorates A LOT!!

ps; i wont use the ordinary shopping bags ever for direct contact with food products!
