Makeup shelf-life

Concealer can last for a year
Powder (loose and pressed) 2 years
Eyeshadows 3-4 years
Foundation 1- 1 and a half years
Pencil liners/lipliners 2 years (sharpern regularly)
Lipstick 2 years
Mascara 4 months
Sponges should be soaked and cleaned every 2 weeks.
Brushes should be soaked and cleaned every 2 weeks.

If your makeup smells different, seperates or if the consistency changes toss it out at once!

Don’t pump too many times (u’re mascara wand) this exposes it to air and makes it dry.

Always close u’re makeup containers properly and place them in a clean, dry area.

Always clean u’re sharpner before sharpening any pencils.

Soak u’re brushes and sponges in slightly warm water to which a few drops of shampoo have been added..place them on a towel and let them air-dry.

I know this is what they teach you but I have makeup from 10-15 yrs ago.
If stored properly.. i.e. not in heat.. in cool dry place.. they can last forever. Specially eyeshadows and lipsticks. Use clean brushes. Mascara dries up after few months anyway.

I know eye-shadows and lipsticks can last a lifetime.. the issue is when u apply it and use the same applicator back to pick-up more shadow.. sebum from u're face/eyelids transfers to the powder and collects lots of bacteria.

I've had to toss out soo many eye-shadows :(

Re: Makeup shelf-life

Thanks! I soo needed this! So where's the best place to store make-up?

Re: Makeup shelf-life

I still use my MAC mascara from 2007. Works well, not clumpy or dry.

Re: Makeup shelf-life

well what i have seen, makeup can really last for 10-15 years..i dunno y it has short expiry dates on sum products..although even after many years it seems to work fine :)

In storage boxes or u're drawer :)

wow finally someone else. i used my clinique mascara for about three years

Re: Makeup shelf-life

nice 1 i needed to know this, thanks x

Re: Makeup shelf-life

I seriously needed to know this! I have seen so many youtube gurus and beauty bloggers have got tons of MAC eyeshadows and all that expencive products (mainly eyeshadow im talking about) do we really need to trash them after 3-4years? If im getting Mac eyeshadow i think ill use it for a lifetime lol as its pricey! Need more opinion on this~!

Re: Makeup shelf-life

Here are my thoughts/habits:

Mascara: I use them until they dry up (usually 6-8 months).
Foundation/concealor: It usually takes me about a year to finish concealor and 1.5-2 years to finish foundation.

Anything that is powder (blush, eyeshadow, contour etc.): My personal belief is that these are "good to use" UNTIL they change texture and look/feel/smell different. I have MAC shadows and blushes that're 5-6 years old and still "perform" like brand new. My NARS Albatross was purchased almost 3 years ago too....as well as several BB Gel liners.

Lip products: Again...unless they texture and/or smell is different...I keep them. I have some MAC and Revlon lipsticks that're almost 4 years old.

I do agree in using products with clean brushes (preventing the risk of contamination / oil build up). I NEVER use my fingers to pick up products. Since my foundation doesn't have a pump...I always use a q-tip. With powder products....ALWAYS a brush.

Brushes that I use with liquid products (foundation, concealor etc), I wash after every single use. All other brushes are washed after 3-4 uses (I say "uses" b/c there are time I can go an entire week without wearing any make-up.

Re: Makeup shelf-life

I would never chuck away make-up unless i find it in some dark corner in my house or its finished..if it looks good to use its good for me!

Re: Makeup shelf-life

i usually run out my mascara, liner, bronzer and lipsticks before expiry
