Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

Hey guys,
I am getting married this December 2015. My nikkah was in 2012, now it will be the barat and walima in shaa Allah. I just wanted some advice. The makeup I had gotten for the nikkah, although well done, made me look much older than I am and in some photos made it look like I was sweating/ it was too shiny. Now, for my wedding in December I kind of want to do my makeup myself for the three days (mehndi, barat, walima. I have some pretty expensive makeup (mostly Sephora or Mac) and am capable of doing it very well (atleast I think so). I would just want someone to do my hair and mehndi on my hands/arms/ feet. I was wondering if anyone had any experience in doing their own makeup for their wedding? How was the experience? Would you advice for or against it?
Thanks

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

Loads of non-desi brides do this but desi people kind of have an expectation for a certain heaviness for a bride. If you’re confident then go ahead but remember to still keep it heavy because a couple of girls asked their makeup artists to keep it simple and they looked like they weren’t wearing makeup in their pictures which looked weird in comparison to everyone else. I think you have enough time to keep practicing.

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

I did my own makeup for my mangni and will be doing my own for the mehndi. I can do my own for the wedding if I REALLY wanted to, but I like the idea of just sitting there and letting someone else deal with my face for the day.

Make sure the foundation you have does not have SPF in it because it’ll cause a white cast on your face when photographed and make sure your makeup is a lot heavier than you normally do because it’ll still photograph very subtle.

Mehndi I want minimal makeup anyways and so I wanted to do it myself because I feel very caked on when I get it done professionally. My suggestion would be, before you completely disregard a professional MUA (who are pretty good at doing what photographs well…usually), go for a trial or two and THEN make your decision.

Where are you located? I’m sure someone here can recommend some MUA.

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

Hey,
So I plan on using Make Up Forever HD Foundation, which is supposed to photograph really well with a heavy countour/highlight using Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit. If anyone has any other suggestions make up wise as to how to make it more prominent, I would really appreciate it.
I get really fussy when someone else does my makeup cause I lose that sense of control in the process. I will be near Gujranwala and Sheikhupura during the wedding, so any makeup artist suggestions in the are would also be appreciated.
I get out of University December 23. We want the wedding to be somewhere between Dec. 25 and Dec 31., so I have time to go to dawats/ enjoy Pakistan before my winter break is over (Jan 20), so I don’t know if I will have the time to really go to trials. How many days does the trial have to be before the wedding? Or there is no deadline as long as you find someone perfect before the day?

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

In Pakistan getting a trial is going to be very very difficult. The usual places don’t give trials or even take a lot of your input especially during the busy December months (I’m getting married in the same week as you). The current trend of heavy brows, lots of contouring, false lashes etc can be translated to desi bridals so you do have more inspiration on instagram etc. Just remember to overdo the eyes so it works in low lighting and keep practicing with crazy phone flash pictures to see how the makeup will look at its worst.

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

I used MUFE foundation too and that’s what I’m using for the mehndi and it photographs really well! My only other suggestion would be to use falsies for sure because it looks better. And stay away from overly glittery eyes. I think the contouring will definitely look nice (I use the same kit!)

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

For falsies I was thinking Mac lashes #36](http://www.paklinks.com/gs/usertag.php?do=list&action=hash&hash=36) . They really add drama to the eye look which can make it look fancier. Why no glitter? I was thinking of using gold glitter as my main lid colour and doing the typical bridal black/maroon crease? Sort of like in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrygWe9GeRM&list=WL&index=37) except without the feathery thing she does around the eye at the end and the specific shade that my dress is in place of the pink colour…

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

yeah that looks nice, I meant more of the natasha salon type glittery look because I personally think THAT much glitter photographs really strangely. Just make sure you practice this look a few times before your wedding so that the crease is there.

And try to go light on the highlight on the brow-bones. There’s a ton of tutorials on youtube so you’ll be set!

TBH for mehndi makeup if you wanna go for the minimal look, just google western brides. Their wedding day makeup is what we tend to wear at the mehndi. =)

good luck!

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

Thanks for all the advice. Good luck to you too!! =)

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

I don’t know where you’re based, but generally in Pakistan its not just the expectation but also the clothes that matter. no matter how it looks personally in pictures if you’re makeup isn’t heavy enough for your dress you will look washed out. As a makeup artist I,ve had loads of clients in the US who don’t want heavy makeup they want western bridal makeup with their desi wedding dress and it just doesn’t match. our dresses are colorful and heavy so is our jewellery. I would recommend using a makeup artist for the 2 big days but if not at least takes some classes

Re: Makeup Advice- doing it myself?

Check out KeepingUpWithMona on YouTube. She posts videos of desi wedding makeup on a variety of skin tones and to match with different color clothes. The videos are all of bridal makeup so they should give you an idea of how heavy handed you need to be with your makeup to achieve a look that photographs best.
