In Islamic countries Mahr is the only thing a woman gets in case of separation, so amount of Mahr is important consideraion for females in Islamic countires.
However in west the property is divied between husband and wife, so i wonder, if Mahr shud still be paid by groom in west.

Re: Mahr Issue in Western Countries
sorry sorry about my above post - that was said considering all is well! and girl still asking for mehr.
I just read another post about mehr - and it totally depends on situation to situation
I am soooooooo glad we did NOT have to put up with the mehr issue. I guess because we NEVER gave mehr a thought! We NEVER QUESTIONED MEHR amount because both our families were happy with the new family relationship. There was NO question on WHAT IF there is a DIVORCE. So there was NO question on MEHR either.
However, I remember the mehr amount - it was RUPEE 1001!(not dollars).
I had split that amount away to the "housekeepers" when I returned back here! - hehe
-I just don't believe any amount will cover up for the pain caused if the partner is unfaithful, disloyal, not nice - whatever. No amount can fill up the void if there is any. So skip the money and learn on improving your relationship and trust on each other.
^That's how life should be. I am glad I am living it.
Good luck for the rest of you who have to enter into a relationship with NEGOTIATIONS. That's shameful on who ever intitate the "asking"/"giving" question with the intention to cap a large amount in pocket.

Of course. The mahr is the right of the wife, regardless of whatever the local law provides her with. Mahr has to be given whether there is separation or not.
Re: Mahr Issue in Western Countries
Islam doesnt change because of where we live. So to answer your question...yes it should still be paid because this is a womans Islamic right. Whether it is a sum of money or a material possession is under the couples discretion.
