Re: maharaja of lahore

Yes it was a Muslim area (80 percent), my family migrated from there. Till the very end it was to become part of Pakistan and at the eleventh hour it was given to India.

Re: maharaja of lahore

I’m serious. :emmy:

William family was a Dakoo family in 17th century, before they conquered Britain.

Re: maharaja of lahore

Gurdaspur was given because of Kashmir as the only land route to Kashmir was though that town. Anyways the undivided Punjab before partition was still Muslim majority around 55-60 percent, and all the major cities like Amritsar etc were Muslim majority, even in delhi there were quite a few Muslims.

Re: maharaja of lahore

I don't think that Amritsar was a Muslim majority area. You are right that overall Punjab was a Muslim majority area and if Sikhs chose to go with Pakistan, then whole Punjab would have become part of Pakistan on majority formula.

In case of Punjab, most of the tehsils in Districts of Punjab were Muslim majority. Gurdaspur had 52% Muslims, Batala 55%, Shakar Gadh 51%.. Meaning thereby except for Pathan kot, the complete Gurdsapur District was Muslim majority area. If we look at Ferozpur, Faazilka had 75% Muslims, Muktasar 67%, Zira 65%. In Amritsar District, only Amritsar Tehsil had majority Sikh population and Tehsil Ajnala had 59% Muslim population.

Re: maharaja of lahore

In Amritsar Muslims were the biggest group 47 % but the Hindus and Sikhs both formed 53%.

Re: maharaja of lahore

Interesting article from India defence journal, another interesting thing is that Punjab (under the unionists) did not want to join Pakistan. They wanted to become a dominion within British India but they lost relevance between 1944 to 1946, that means Punjab was the last to enter the band wagon.

Re: maharaja of lahore

Does that mean Muslim League was not successful in Punjab until 1946, when it compromised with the feudal lords to win support. :hmmm:

Re: maharaja of lahore

In 1937 Muslim league won one seat, and then they did some arrangement with unionists with the result the unionists agreed to accept quaid e azam as the sole spokesman for Muslims, but they wanted ML to stay away from politics. The unionists wanted to stay independent, and maybe this was the reason why quaid e azam had the resolution of Pakistan passed in Lahore. And then the workers of Muslim league visited rural areas and the slogans made an impact "Muslim hay to Muslim league main aa" and Pakistan ka matlab kya la illaha illah made an impact. In 1946 elections Muslim league won 75 seats out of 86 Muslim seats, but the government was formed by unionists-akali and congress, after the fall of the government in march 1947 the hold of unionists ended. By that time most of the big jageerdars and peers had started joining Muslim league.

Re: maharaja of lahore

These feudals still forms major part of all the political parties of Pakistan :(

Re: maharaja of lahore

With the passage of time their strangle hold has some what loosened in central punjab, and it seems they are fighting a lost war in seraiki areas as well. It's a matter of time these people get kicked out.

Re: maharaja of lahore

League was always pro landlord, that was the reason that Congress didn’t form coaltion government in UP because league was pro landlord. And there were no caste like poor and power loving pundas:)

Of course william and family was unfit to rule but there were no replacement either, we had hitler and Saudi family to rule the world then, British were far more civilized rulers than Maharajas of Lahore and Pune types:)

It was only connection through plains to Jammu not kashmir, all connections to Kashmir flow through Jammu, Jammu being Hindu majority cannot remain in India hands without Gurdaspur. It was settled in favour of India, the other muslim majority territory was Lakshdweep which India got:)
