The first squadron of 15 state-of-the art indigenously developed Al-Khalid tanks will be handed over to the Pakistan Army on on July 20. Official sources told PPI that one of the most powerful weapons of its time is mounted on the tank, which can engage targets at long stand off distances. The weapon is supported by a modern image stabilised fire control system with capabilities for day and night operations. They said the tank is equipped with a 125 smooth bore chrome plated gun and a thermal imaging system for target and a co-axial and anti aircraft machine gun. Auto tracking of moving targets is possible with the tank. The tank meeting the contemporary needs has a nuclear, biological and chemical protection system and is also equipped with explosion suppression system. The tank is fortified by modular composite armour, which can effectively defeat the modern ammunation. Having a 1200 horse power power pack, it has asuper charged multi fuel diesel engine, semi automatic planatery type transmission, hydraulic shock absorbers and buffers with torsion bars, rubber padded and rubber bushed tracks, high efficiency friction brakes and facilities for land navigation through GPS. The result of relentless efforts spread over eight years, Al-Khalid stands well matched with modern contempary tanks. It meets all the defence requirements for the foreseeable future. It indeed is a great leap forward in the quest to achieve an impregnable defence for the beloved country. Al-Khalid tank is an ideal blend of mobility, firepower and protection. Its high agility and obstacle crossing capability makes it an effective weapon that can match the tactical requirements of modern warfare.
