Maasi Culture

In Desi society, people preferred to perform their household tasks themselves.. servants / maids were only hired by elites..

Time changed.. and now miad (Pakistani Masi which affected use of Maa-si - Khala and Indian Bai) is hired for all the classes. No more restriction to elite / upper class.

What are the reasons behind such change? extra burden on ladies or they just want to chill watching Hum TV / star plus?

Another issue is Maasis do provide help in household work but sometimes ‘ghar ki safai karte karte, safaya bhi hojata hai’. some incidents of Robberies later shown involvement of Mukhbar Masi. Having a good honest maasi is considered as one of the naimat e khudawandi (God’s gift to lazy ladies), but not everyone is so lucky… Maasi ke bade nakhre hain.

share your experience of such nakhre?

Re: Maasi Culture

We had one, all the utensils of the house disappeared. It's very difficult to survive these days without them and they take benefit of that.

Re: Maasi Culture

Why people started depending on them? I don't think our daadi/naanis would ever think of that.

In my family, Amma and sisters do all the work. Few months back, when Amma was not feeling well she hired a maasi, but due to her nakhras and late arrival, she had to do the work herself and therefore maasi ki chhutti hui.

Re: Maasi Culture

It's because of the lifestyle, nowadays in many houses both husbands and wives work. In the house usually it would be the parents, and most of them cannot take care of the house, and why should they.

Re: Maasi Culture

Do you think maasis are only hired by working woman? moti aunties toRing manji all the day and watching star plus also have maasis

Re: Maasi Culture

In some cases when the kids get married, the parents (of joint family systems) arrange maasis as they do not expect the Bahus to work. In that case the house would become a complete mess. Anyways this has bloomed during the past 10
years, I have always seen my mother do all the household work until she could.

Re: Maasi Culture

What should be the good qualities of Maasi that should be considered while hiring her?

Re: Maasi Culture

^ good character, sughar and not a chor :p Basically all the qualities of a good bahu minus shakal and education.

Re: Maasi Culture

Isn't it difficult to ascertain these qualities in a person at the time of hiring?

One of our relative told that sweets placed in cupboard of children started getting disappeared. Once children Khala was in corner, where she could see cupboard but person besides cupboard could not see her and then she found that Maasi got a handful of sweets and went into washroom.... Khala found wrappers of sweets just beneath the window of wash-room

Re: Maasi Culture

^ its impossible, some Of these women even get their hands on jewellery. It's very dangerous now a days as you never know she might be a part of some criminal gang.

Re: Maasi Culture

I think situation in big cities (where need for Maasi is increasing) is worse than villages and small towns, where people know each other and Maasi can be hired from poor relatives.

On other side of the story, Maasis are quite helpless as most of the time their income goes to husbands who are tut-paina ( like moti beghmaat) and survive on Maasis income. Many Maasis do talk about these issues to create soft corner in employer's heart.

Re: Maasi Culture

Off topic:
I don't want a maasi, I want a chef.

Re: Maasi Culture

:emmy:

Are Maasi common in KSA? What are they called?

Re: Maasi Culture

Its common for Saudis, as for non Saudis, some keep, some don’t. But for non arabs its usually someone who works on an hourly basis like 2-3 hrs a day.

Re: Maasi Culture

Maasi always work on hourly basis... full time maids are not in range of all the people todate and they are still limited to elite class

Re: Maasi Culture

Saudis have full time maids usually.

Re: Maasi Culture

Can we have hourly chef too ?:hmmm:

Re: Maasi Culture

do you want to have a chef for ubaaling anda?

Re: Maasi Culture

They might be elites. no?
