Lying and kidding/Joking.

What is the difference between lying and kidding or joking in desi
lingo ?

Is exaggeration also a form of lying ? I saw in these forums when someone was describing a roach said it was size of Cadillac.
( No disrespect intended for that posteress just a comment in passing)
Examples please.

Re: Lying and kidding/Joking.

Lying is lying and a fact is a fact ... so there is not doubt about it. But while joking its already been assumed that other person knows that its not true and its just for the sake of fun.

Re: Lying and kidding/Joking.

How would I know that if some is lying or joking at a given time ?
For example if someone says " I ate chocolate covered roasted spiders while I was in Africa."
Now how would I know that it is just a joke or a statement of fact , right ?

Re: Lying and kidding/Joking.

Mirch...it's called a hyperbole.

The person who is exaggerating assumes that you know that there is no such thing as a cockroach the size of cadillac....at least not around here.

I dont think that the use of a hyperbole (or exaggeration) is considered a lie. The underlying statement the person is saying is true however the degree to which is it true is not correct. 9 times out 10 the receiver of that statement knows that the sender is using a hyperbole.

In my observation and research (and yes I have studied interpersonal communication in uni) females tend to exaggerate (or use hyperboles) more then males.

Re: Lying and kidding/Joking.

well this part is little bit tricky ... and it mostly depends on the context of conversation :) ... u'll learn it with time

Re: Lying and kidding/Joking.

if someone tells me this then I would assume its true because he is stating a fact and not using a hyperbole.

some people get it...others dont. you may just be the type that needs things spelled out for u :D

my nephew and BIL are like that as well....they dont get sarcasm, hyperboles and too many jokes. lol
