On his recent visit to South Asia, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell focused on defusing tensions between India and Pakistan. He also stressed the Bush administration’s desire to build a “vibrant, bilateral relationship” with Pakistan and that U.S. interest was “not solely driven by the need for Pakistan’s assistance in the war on terrorism,” but also “to promote economic reform and long-term development.” What is the climate for the revival of economic investment and the challenges of social development in Pakistan that the Musharraf administration faces? What are the prospects for the country’s democratization? What steps are required to reduce tensions with Pakistan’s neighbor India?
General Pervez Musharraf took the presidential oath on June 20, 2001. The veteran of two wars, General Musharraf has had a long, distinguished military career. He was promoted to the rank of general on October 7, 1998 and appointed chief of Army Staff. He took on the additional charge of chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee on April 9, 1999 and has been performing duties as the chief executive of Pakistan since October 1999. He is a graduate of the Command and Staff College in Quetta, the National Defense College and the Royal College of Defense Studies in the United Kingdom.
We are pleased to co-sponsor this program with Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and Indus Society of North America.
