Loyalist icon charged with attempted murder

A Protestant extremist was charged Saturday with trying to murder five people, including Sinn Fein leaders Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness, following an abortive bomb attack in Northern Ireland.

Michael Stone, 51, was tackled by security officers Friday at the entrance to the Stormont Parliament Building in Belfast. A handgun, a knife and several homemade pipe bombs were seized, police said.

Security officials were alerted after a man began spray-painting the building with the slogan “Sinn Fein are murderers.” He was stopped before he could finish the last word.

The incident triggered a dramatic evacuation of the assembly after a bag allegedly filled with explosives was thrown into the lobby of Stormont during a debate on self-rule for the British province.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Stone was charged with possession of explosives with intent to endanger life, possession of an imitation firearm and possession of articles for terrorist purposes, including nail bombs, an axe and a garrotte.

Stone is a longtime supporter of the pro-British Protestant cause in Northern Ireland and was leader of the Ulster Freedom Fighters while in prison for an attack on an IRA funeral in Milltown Cemetery in West Belfast.

He had tossed grenades into a crowd of Catholic mourners, killing three people.

He ran from the scene but was captured and severely beaten. He is arthritic and walks with a limp as a result of the dislocated thigh bone he received in the attack, friends say.

I usually get to hear Muslims labelled as extremists, but it sort of caught me by surprise when an individual from another religion was labelled an extremist.

I’ve only heard a little about the tensions in Ireland. I was wondering if someone could provide me with the history as well as some reasons for such an attack?

Re: Loyalist icon charged with attempted murder

attempted murder my behind…why not charge him with terrorism and related activities?..:halo:..oh yeah..i forgot…he is NOT MUSLIM…so why ruin his career and future by charging him with terrorism…afterall he is just an angry non-muslim…who only killed 3 ppl previously…

Re: Loyalist icon charged with attempted murder

England conquered Ireland about 800 years ago. England broke away from the Catholic Church, England encourage Protestant immigration to Ireland. A large Protestant population settled in what is now Northern Ireland, becoming a slim majority there, with strong pro-British allegiances.

Most of Ireland was Catholic and after 1916 became anti-British and demanded Irish Independence. The Protestants in Northern Ireland opposed Irish independence.

Like India’s Muslims had a fear of Hindu rule, Protestants feared that that if Ireland became independent then they would be oppressed by the catholic majority.

Like in India, Protestants were the majority in one part of the country and not in another. So Britain partitioned Ireland. The mainly catholic parts became an independent country, and the mainly Protestant part (Northern Ireland) became part of Britain because most of its population wanted to stay with Britain.

Now the Catholics in Northern Ireland were against partition and wanted Ireland to be a united country like it historically was. A minority took up arms to try and force Britain out. As a result, Britain sent in the army and special forces, and the Protestants set up militias to fight the Catholic militia (IRA). Both Irish and Catholic militias targetted each others civilian population as well.

In short, Catholic terrorists fought to push Britain out to unite Ireland. Protestant terrorists fought to keep Northern Ireland as part of Britain because they don’t believe they can be fairly ruled by Catholics. Britain originally sent in the army to crush the Catholic terrorists, but the army was withdrawn as part of a peace deal. in the late 90s.
