Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Not a good business decision.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A decision by retail giant Lowe’s Home Improvement to pull ads from a reality show about American Muslims following protests from an evangelical Christian group has sparked criticism and calls for a boycott against the chain.

The retailer stopped advertising on TLC’s “All-American Muslim” after a conservative group known as the Florida Family Association complained, saying the program was “propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda’s clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values.”

The show premiered last month and chronicles the lives of five families from Dearborn, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a large Muslim and Arab-American population.

A state senator from Southern California said he was considering calling for a boycott.

Calling the Lowe’s decision “un-American” and “naked religious bigotry,” Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, told The Associated Press on Sunday that he would also consider legislative action if Lowe’s doesn’t apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads. The senator sent a letter outlining his complaints to Lowe’s Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Niblock.

“The show is about what it’s like to be a Muslim in America, and it touches on the discrimination they sometimes face. And that kind of discrimination is exactly what’s happening here with Lowe’s,” Lieu said.

The Florida group sent three emails to its members, asking them to petition Lowe’s to pull its advertising. Its website was updated to say that “supporters’ emails to advertisers make a difference.”

Suehaila Amen, whose family is featured on “All-American Muslim,” said she was disappointed by the Lowe’s decision.

“I’m saddened that any place of business would succumb to bigots and people trying to perpetuate their negative views on an entire community,” Amen, 32, told The Detroit News on Sunday.

Lowe’s issued a statement Sunday apologizing for having “managed to make some people very unhappy.”

“Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views,” the statement said. “As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance.”

The North Carolina-based company did not say whether it would reinstate advertising on the show.

The apology doesn’t go far enough, Lieu said. The senator vowed to look into whether Lowe’s violated any California laws and said he would also consider drafting a senate resolution condemning the company’s actions.

“We want to raise awareness so that consumers will know during this holiday shopping season that Lowe’s is engaging in religious discrimination,” Lieu said.

Besides an apology and reinstatement of the ads, Lieu said he hoped Lowe’s would make an outreach to the community about bias and bigotry.

Lieu’s office said a decision was expected Wednesday or Thursday on whether to proceed with the boycott.

Lowe’s issued another statement later Sunday, saying company officials are seeking to talk to Lieu about his concerns and clarify the company’s position.

“We are aware of the senator’s comments and have reached out to his office to arrange an opportunity for us to speak with him directly to hear his thoughts,” the statement read.

Dawud Walid, Michigan director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said his group felt “extreme disappointment” at Lowe’s “capitulation to bigotry.”

Walid said he has heard expressions of anger and calls for a boycott by Muslims but said a key to resolving the Lowe’s advertising controversy will be how non-Muslim religious leaders and others react to Lowe’s decision.

“I will be picking up the phone tomorrow to some of our friends and allies to explain the situation to them,” Walid said Sunday.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

I came across this earlier today. I'm seriously considering giving Lowe's a call and giving them an earful.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

already boycotting them ..

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Dang. Just bought something from there for whole $4.

Why are all these stupid companies so rabidly anti-Muslim ?

So sick of their religious racism.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Lowes has to look after its shareholder interests. It is a simple arithmetic comparison - do they expect more business loss angering Evangelical Christians or Muslims.

Shouldn't you guys be angry and protesting the association that is creating the issue rather than Lowes for this?

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Whats next, would you also support public buses in New York for example, not allowing blacks to sit because Whites suddenly began protesting their presence, assuming they stand to lose more by losing White ridership then Black?

I mean we can come up with a multitude of absurd scenarios in which the majority demand a minority be deprived in some way.

Let me give you another:
The Hindu share holders of TATA automobiles, demands that the NANO car not be sold to Muslims, because of the potential to turn these cars into car bombs. So TATA suddenly decides Muslims should not be allowed to buy their cars because the Hindu share holders would be offended.

Companies can refuse business to whom ever they like, but whether they are in the right is whats questionable.

Anger is not directed at the organization creating the issue because we expect this from them, in as much as we would expect antisemitism from Nazis, racism from the KKK. What we dont expect, is for companies and individuals, or organizations, from whom we expect better, to be cowed down by pressure from bigots.

Bigots are bigots, but when people actually listen to them, they gain a degree of legitimacy. What Lowes is doing is an injustice, and it may be for their bottom line, but it certainly doesn't augur well for Muslims in America.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

this is outrageous you can't boycott a TV show based on religion of the people in the program.

America is land where hatred of muslim civilians is accepted as normal it appears.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

@Med911 - I think you make a fair point, yes Lowes should not so easily succumb to such pressures.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Well, the scenarios you mention differ somewhat from what Lowe's did. Any sort of discrimination on public buses, at least in the US, would be a violation of the 14th Amendment and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Similarly, any private business refusing to do business with a protected class, would also run foul of the Civil Rights Act.

All American Muslim is a commercial product, and it's producers may or may not be Muslim. The Civil Rights Act protects consumers from being discriminated against in private businesses, but I don't think producer's of TV shows selling ad space in their programs to other businesses would fall under it's protections. Also, just to be safe, Lowe's predictably has stated that the pulling of the ad had nothing to do with the show being about Muslims.

In this case, the best thing we can do is completely ostracize Lowe's and try to hurt them financially by refraining to do business with them, asking others to refrain, and to spread this agenda.

I am choosiing Home Depot over Lowe's

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Recently a group of American Jesus fans in, yes, Florida became upset during the course of their hundred-plus hours of television viewing each week when they discovered some new reality teevee show with the controversial premise “American Muslims are regular family people,” because why should some Muslims get to be normal when evangelical Christians have to be so insane all the time? NOT FAIR. So… maybe just “change the channel to one of four hundred other concurrently running programs,” if you insist on being a weepy bigot? Ha ha, NO. These turds, the “Florida Family Association,” immediately protested, and incredibly enough one of the program’s advertisers, awful retail chain Lowe’s, decided that it, too, was so “pro-family” that they needed to get rid of its ads on this show, about families. But they apologize, on Facebook, if anyone somehow got the weird impression that their company is run by spineless assholes!

Bet they are very glad Facebook hasn’t yet gotten around to adding a “phuck you” button to their platform yet! Here’s their awkward statement:

"It appears that we managed to step into a hotly contested debate with strong views from virtually every angle and perspective – social, political and otherwise – and we’ve managed to make some people very unhappy. We are sincerely sorry. We have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, across our workforce and our customers, and we’re proud of that longstanding commitment.

Lowe’s has received a significant amount of communication on this program, from every perspective possible. Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lighting rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."

Thanks, Lowe’s PR person who hates his/her life right now! Except the statement is missing the sentence where they say they will run the ads again, because fear, always fear. And now a California Senator is calling for a boycott, hooray!

Buzzfeed has also helpfully culled a collection of the bat**** Facebook comments for the masochistically-inclined.

Oh well, Lowe’s is sure to enjoy a bump in wingnut business in Florida, on all those foreclosed homes no one owns anymore!

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

^ That is very funny.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Sad to see so many bigoted comments at,

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

The scenario I mentioned was simply to illustrate a point. The legal aspects are not relevant to the actual point. I realize the civil rights act may not apply.

By the way, I added the 'Whats next" at the beginning of the post to make the point that its really a slippery slope.
If today we allow Lowes to pull out its ads from a Muslim reality show, because of complaints from bigots, will that not embolden them further? If Muslims dont stand up for themselves, the bigots will simply demand bigger concessions.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

^ "If Muslims dont stand up for themselves, the bigots will simply demand bigger concessions."

Proposed modification - "If people with an iota of fairness dont stand up for each other, the bigots will simply demand bigger concessions."

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

^ Amen.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Yes you are right.

Re: Lowes criticized for pulling ads from TV show about American Muslims

Seriously if Lowe had not put the ads in the first place, these repercussions would have been avoided.

Lowe should have stood firm on their decision to continue the ads. They would have won many admirers. Stopping them shows the kind of short sightedness these companies have.
