Low Platelets Count in Blood

An aunt of mine has been recently diagnosed with excessively low platelet counts i.e. 8000-10000 where the normal range of platelets is 150,000 to 4,50,000 in human blood. She had been bleeding from nose and gums and went through excessive bleeding in periods for about three months as well. She didnt take it seriously nor told anybody. Its when the bluish bruises started to show on her body that she went to the doctor and the blood tests showed decreased platelet count in blood. She went through blood transfusion also. First time the platelets increased upto 45,000 but then in two days fell to as low as 7000 again. The platelets are not growing anymore and only falling. All the family is much too disturbed because we dont even have an idea how dangerous this actually is and doctors are not able to guide us properly.

If anyone can, please share the relevant info or any of your experiences regarding low platelet count in blood. Looking very much forward to the responses.

Re: Low Platelets Count in Blood

*-Age of ur aunt?

-How about the other cell lines? RBCs? TLCs? (check her CBC report)

-Her PT, aPTT, reticulocytes? (check her CBC report)

-For how long she has been experiencing this bleeding and bruises?

-Has been she suffered from any severe infection recently? or having any liver disease like Hepatitis?

-Is she taking any drug for pain like aspirin (Disprin) from a very long time?

-Check the doctor's prescription and see if there is a word written on it 'SPLENOMEGALY'.*

Low platelet count can be from many causes.....so first answer few questions above and hopefully il tell u abt her disease.
