Low Blood Pressure

My blood pressure takes a dip every now and then whenever it so desires. Doesn’t bother me much exept I black out standing up or sitting up if i’m lying down and feel too tired to do anything! Today is another such day, I checked it and it was 85/55. I talked to my doc about it a while ago and he told me to eat more salt and keep some black licorice to snack on when I feel dizzy. Apparently there is research that shows it helps raise your b.p. Gee, how scientific.

Why am I posting this. Well I don’t know. Except I am sick of feeling this way and want to do something about it. Does anyone else here have this problem and if so what do you do? I eat enough salt as it is I think, a habit I acquired trying to compensate for the lack of spices during my time living away from home. Any more salt, and you can use me as a salt shaker.

Nescio, the neem hakeem, perhaps you can suggest something. (other than rat poison of course)

I am a total non-medical person so excuse me if it sounds totally unscientific.

Are you basically malnourished or is it a medical condition (malfunction of some glands)? I never thought eating salt is a good thing, but thats probably because my father had high b.p. so we never ate too much salt. Especially if salt absorbs water in the body, doesn't it put more pressure on your kidneys?

Wouldn't eating more fresh fruits and vegetables be better compared to eating salts?

How are your eating habits? I know I use to feel the same way (standing up or suddenly sitting up) and that was when i had horrible eating habits...not that they've changed much, but still better than before.

Mention some of ur horrible habits as I want to worry about myself next time I dont crawl out of my bed due to low feeling arising out of low bp.
End up with suggestions in improving diets if u can. :-)
haya: I wud get back to you laterz.

Seedha Saada,

I hope that wasn't a joke. But anyway to answer your question, my eating habits included not eating for hours on end just because I didn't feel hungry for some reason. This was when i wasn't living at home. Back home now, I usually have two meals a day so thats why I think I have almost no dizzy spells.

I used to get dizzy spells too. I still do once in a while when I skip breakfast but I've improved my eating habits i.e. no caffiene after 9 pm, breakfast, home-cooked food etc.

No sehar, it's not my eating habits. I eat frequently and pretty healthy especially since I have been home this year. My sugar goes low if I don't eat and I would do anything to avoid the headache that follows. As for fruits and veggies, I try to eat as many of those as I can.

I had the doc test my hemoglobin and he was supposed to let me know if something was wrong and he never did.. so all should be clear on that front. I do suspect it has something to do with that though. I am going to try taking some iron on the side and see if that helps.

Humsa, I haven't been big on caffeine this year, I doubt it's that. I used to consume umpteen cups a day at one point and I was fine back then. Maybe I need to go back to that. :-)

Faisal, as far as I know that's the point of taking in more salts, to retain water; since the more water in your body, the higher the b.p.

If it's an iron problem, take multi-vitamins that contain a good dose of iron like One a Day. And yea, caffeine has nothing to do with it, it's just not healthy anyway :) Hope you feel better soon.

I have this some times connected to lack of sleep and food. I feel better when I eat regularly.

yeah, caffeine helps boost up the cardio performance. i sometimes take a strong cup of coffee before a rigorous workout..
but for you, that would a temporary fix. Why not try getting a good cardio workout every now and then, and seeking a good treatment to enrich your red blood cells at the same time..

hmmm...........my first intuition would be to offer you a nice big cup of rat poison, but since that is out of the question, here's plan B :D :

although comsuming salt is a factor contributing to high blood pressure, i won't advice you that to cure ur low blood pressure......cuz before u know u'll end up high BP. The complaints you describe are quite typical of collaps/faiting due to temporary low BP. I'd suggest first of all, to have a good eating pattern. Make sure u get at least 1.5-2 liters of water every day (coffee/tea/cola not included.....juices are).
Also make sure that if iron anemia is a contributing factor, you eat enough green vegetables and meat.

hmmm......let me PM you some more tips :~D

Hello, there is a condition called hypoglycemia that has the type of symptoms that you are describing. It has something to do with blood sugars. A hypoglycemic can have a sudden, large drop in blood sugars which causes low blood pressure, fainting and weakness. A good dose of something sugary - a candy bar, glass of OJ etc brings the blood sugars back up. Thats all I know about it, maybe you can ask your doc. Theres also hypo-thyriodism which can have similar symptoms and can be diagnosed with a simple blood test. You should ask your doc about these things, they arent serious but when you never know when you will start to faint, it could get dangerous, ie like if you were driving. Good luck!

hmm.....are you sure that the two things you mention are not serious?:o

Some people can have low blood pressure as normal for them. Intervention is adviced if you are having fainting spells. Must get blood work done and also endocrine profile for things like diabetes, thyroid ...

But definitely don't worry about it - as long as lower BP is above 60.

Thanks for the input guys. I am wondering if this maybe the reason I am always cold..even my mom thinks i'm always shivering. And I noticed my finger nails go blue when I am cold. It's a recent discovery. Nes :-p

I think outy is right, more cardio is what I require! I suspect my heart is giving way..

well, if you require more cardio, then some mountainous fresh air would be a great added bonus., both go hand n' hand..my heart gave way to that, and then it never recovered, am really glad that it didn't...

It has nothing to do with your health. Does it usually happen right after I kick your butt in Y! Pool?. If yes, then it’s quite normal. Many of the opposition players do complain of feeling low after getting beaten by me.

:smooth:

Hello Haaya! you might be having the low bp from many reasons. I recommend you tell your doc to have your blood test taken. You might be getting this because of low hemoglobin levels in your blood (low iron) or as mamaof3 said, it could be due to hypoglycemia. I hope it gets well :insha: because this was happening to me last summer and i know how frustrating it was.

Outy, some mountainous fresh air sounds really enticing but alas there are no mountains in Toronto. :-p And it’s a tad bit hard to do a cardio workout when you are ready to fall over.

fungi, let me jog your memory child, we played once a few years ago and I remember distinctly that I won. I always do. So it couldn’t be that reason. But perhaps you’re looking to lower your b.p.? :smokin:

faisal, thanks. I’ve lived with it long enough, for some reason it felt a bit pronounced these past few months, but it’s not too bothersome..usually a swig of juice 'n putting my feet up and I feel better.. it must be my sugar plus anemia acting up on me again.

well, they say changes in lattitude, changes in attitude .that's all you need :D..and don't worry about the latter part, you will be running up and down like a mountain goat in no time :D....by the way 'mountain goat' is an honorary title, few of my good friends call me that sometimes...
