**‘Lots of nations will soon have chuckers’

Former Pakistan skipper Mushtaq Mohammad has questioned the bowling action of Sri Lankan off-spinner Muthiah Muralitharan and Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar.

“Murali’s action is very suspect,” Mushtaq told rediff.com “People around the world are copying his action. The ball, which leaves right-handed batsmen, cannot be bowled without jerking or straightening the arm. You just cannot bowl that ball with the off-spinner’s grip. Technically, it is not a fair delivery. You can only bowl that ball if you open up your shoulders or jerk it. From 22 yards, with an off-spinner’s grip you just can’t turn the ball.”

Mushtaq, a leg-spinner himself, warned against the danger of creating a generation of chuckers.

“There are half-a-dozen chuckers in international cricket. But no one has the guts to stop them. Lots of nations will soon have chuckers,” he said.

Asked if Akhtar’s action was also suspect, he said, “Of course. Someone has to draw the line and judge his action. Anyone who is called for a suspect action is sent for a week to rectify his action and allowed to play international cricket again. It is unfair to batsman who get out facing these bowlers.”

According to a report on Cricinfo, Bruce Elliott, a professor at the University of Western Australia and a member of the International Cricket Council’s committee which investigates suspect actions, has also questioned Murali’s latest doosra. Elliot was the same person who had cleared Murali’s action five years ago.

The Sri Lankan spinner achieved the 500 Test wickets milestone this week and said he plans to play till 2007 so that he can take at least 650 wickets.

Former Australia skipper Bobby Simpson has also criticised bowlers with suspect actions.

“The decision by the ICC to allow boards to decide the fate of the bowlers was ludicrous. It is obvious they will defend their players’ actions. I therefore resigned from the ICC legal action committee,” he told rediff.com

Simpson said he had not heard of any player with a physical deformity being allowed to play in any other sport. Murali has claimed he has a physical deformity, which allow him to bowl the way he does.

So why cricket, ask Simpson. And how could the same players who can’t straighten their arms hurl the ball from the boundary right into the wicketkeeper’s gloves?

Simpson dismissed these players as a bunch of javelin bowlers and blamed the ICC for misunderstanding the mechanics of chucking.

Anyway, for a fast bowler, I can see why the batsman will feel cheated, cz the ball is now coming faster ... but for a spinner? Help me understand, if the batsmen can't play Murali, whats their excuse - off-spinner or leg-spinner aside? :-)

This is the same hype which was there when Pakistani bowlers could reverse swing and no one else could. It was called ball tampering in those days. As soon as other countries bowlers started reverse swinging it suddenly became an art.

Now these guys actions have been cleared by ICC and panels of ex players. Now either they are all talking rubbish or the only people who are talking sense are these handful of guys who when they need attention and publicity have to give such sensational statements.

Hummm..It could be extra spin...ability to spin in a certian direction which is not possible with normal action.

By the way..I am glad that this comment was not from an Indian. :D

F&B.... yeah whatever. You know what, it's OK to chuck. WHy don't you let Irfan Pathan chuck. We will still beat his ass up. Chucking doesn't give any advantage to the bowlers. Let everybody chuck.

Actually I agree here. If ICC can make a rule that one can bowl whatever way one wants to then its fine.But as long as it is not approved its CHEATING.

Oh and wasnt this the SAME INDIAN media who wrote england as "cry babies" because they tied down the tendulkar by bowling on leg. Do they have to say ANY THING AT ALL on what Indian spinner was bowling to INZIMAM in first ODI? ALL ON LEG....

For Indian media if they cant eat grapes, they are sour ! If they cant produce one Shoaib in a billion, shoaib is a chucker !

I’d be very interested to see what happens when Ganguly walks out to bat tomorrow. I can only visualise Shoaib hitting Ganguly on the helmet with a bouncer and saying: “chukh this”

I wouldn't give this report much credence. It's quoting Mushtaq Mohammed one of the slimiest c*** suckers to have ever represented Pakistan.

This lowlife trawls every village in England to sell his services. If he's ended up in India to badmouth Murali and Shoaib it's hardly breaking news.

I hope he turns up in my neck of the woods I'll personally give him £5 to polish my shoes.

All these old farts are pissed at the fact that they didn't make money or earned fame as much as the present day cricketers. They are all sour grapes. And the fact that PCB don't give a $hit about their experience ignites the fumes farther.
