My understanding is that for example if you have a close friend who is into drugs etc. and always prompts you to try them as well, instead of giving into peer pressure it’s better to lose that kind of friend in this world, then to go ahead down the wrong path, and then have to answer to your lord on the judgment day. Since hereafter is forever, if you lose your good deeds in this world, you would have to pay for them for a long time later.
