Miandad accuses Woolmer of insulting players

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, Dec 20: Former Pakistan cricket team coach, Javed Miandad, has lashed out at Bob Woolmer for insulting Pakistani players by saying they had mental problems.

“Criticizing one’s own team with such remarks is an insult of, not only the players but of the entire nation and it would be better if the coach handles the situation by motivating the players,” Miandad told Dawn on Monday.

“The boys need motivation and not criticism from their coach as they have a long and exacting tour ahead in Australia,” Miandad said. “Obviously there is an element of mental confusion or mental awe within the performance,” remarked Woolmer as quoted in the press after Pakistan lost to Australia by 491 runs in the first Test at Perth on Sunday, the most humiliating defeat ever suffered by Pakistan.

“You have to show loyalty to the country from which you are earning your bread and butter but by making such remarks you are insulting them and as a Pakistani and former coach of the same team I am deeply hurt as well as disappointed,” lamented Miandad.

“To me by using the word mental confusion, the coach is labelling his players as mentally disturbed people and that is also the insult of the nation,” he added. He said that nationalism should reflect in any statement made by a coach representing Pakistanis but here it was completely lacking which was a matter of serious concern for him.

He said that New Zealand had recently been defeated by Australia but their coach did not criticize his players, instead he boosted their morale. Miandad also criticized Woolmer for saying he would consult some people to look for a solution to the problem.

“Consulting others shows a lack of confidence to tackle the situation but even I would advise him to spend more and more time at the nets with the players and give more attention to other ground activities which to me is a better solution,” Miandad stressed.

He pointed out that Woolmer had already consulted others during the last Champions Trophy held in England to choose to bat first in windy conditions in semifinals against the West Indies at the Rose Bowl which went badly wrong.

He said that defeats and wins were part of the game but as a team official the most important thing was how one handled the situation. He said that the PCB did not learn a lesson from the previous experience of hiring foreign coaches.

“In the past Richard Pybus had also made similar remarks against Pakistani players and now another foreign coach is doing the same,” he remarked. Pybus had said that Pakistani players were not keen to learn, after the team failed to qualify for the second round of the World Cup in South Africa.

“We are not inept and we have won many matches and established many records,” Miandad specified. He said that the PCB should take notice of such statements, otherwise he would continue his criticism.

"It is the role of the board

I dont get it. How come ‘mental confusion’ is an insult to the players and the nation and also equivalent to calling them mentally disturbed?

I agree that Miandad should keep quiet for now. He used to be so agitated and threatened to resign after media criticism and is doing the same again.

he is an idiot…You see that is why education is so important…

but all hats off to his services for pakistan as a player…now we realize how great he was ( as a batsman)…

He is attempting a revolt by players against coach by such remarks so that this joker again gets the job, Miandad you are a pathetic looser :nook:

:hehe: @ Miandad

basically Miandad is a neglected & ill-treated child who is now taking a revenge

because of his own faults of man-mismanagement. first players revolted against him as captain, then players didn’t listen to him as coach, something is terribly wrong with Miandad, now we can see him bit*hing about things that didn’t happen.

There is no need for him to be jaleous with Bob. Not after 72 all out. The team would probably have scored the same, without a coach.

The reason of jealousy is not 'success' or 'failure' of the team but the position :) because Miandad was ousted and replaced with Woolmer, hence all the bit*hing and crying.

Just to keep the record straight, players revolted against him becasue of politics that Imran and Party used to play to keep Karachites out of the team or atleast to keep their profile low.

Thanks God that Karachite-Lahori politics is no more that strong as it was used to be. That politics was the only reason i hated Imran for just like I hate Miandad becasue of his jahalat & big-open mouth.

Miandad is after Bob just becasue Bob nai uss k pait per laat maree hai is mee coaching ka kuch aamal dakhal nahi hai :)

Lagta hai (being a cricket genius) Miandad ka sara demagh cricket meen hee kharch ho gaya hai and he cant use his brain elsewhere.

May be you are right about Imran Khan, I've a different opinion re that revolt. Lets keep that for a separate thread if it ever shows up :D

are nehin

Maindad may be right guys...

Hard to understand why u guys r taking it out on Miandad. Rightnow its Bob who should be questioned. Miandad has the right to critisize, just like everone else, when Miandad was coach. Bob should have produced results to avoid criticism. If Pak does well, he sure would like to get the credit for it, so if its doing bad, he should bear the critics.

I see a difference between two coaches. Miandad may have focused on batting so the bowling did not do well during his time. I know bowlers like Akhter were not too happy with him. We saw lot of extras coming from bowlers like sami and others. Now, bowling seems to be doing good but batting is horrible. Only if we could combine both of them into one person, may be wat we get is something like Imran. However to me, at this point, this team seems to be "not coached at all". Why are we paying Bob then.

^ Sir, criticism is alright when justified but look at the comments he is making. 'insulting a nation and players' ? Give us a break! this is just criticism for the sake of it.

it does exists...

Miandad is not a good statesmen, we get it.
Bob Woolmer, on the other hand, is a good statesman.

But we are talking about coaching here, not statesmanship. There is no reason to hate Miandad, he served this country more than any Bob, Tom, dick or harry.

He served good as batsman, period.

We brought BOB for Consistency, its his job to bring it in the team. Why blame Miandad for his failure.

If all of us have a right to criticize Woolmer on various grounds, why can't this guy criticize, specially considering the fact that Woolmer stole his job :)

well yeah i dont like the way he talks nowadays, just keep your mouth shut and keep your respect. u know why r u wasting ti??

well hes unemployed...not much to do anyways..so he entertains himself by givin these statements..lol
