Looking for Oil Statistics

In one of the articles I was reading this morning it was claimed that Europe consumes in barrels pretty much the same amount as US which was surprise to me.

So, I am looking for statistics as to how much US consumes and how much some of the western European countries do. Also, how much their consumption is compared to what they produce vs. how much they have to import?

Also I am trying to find out how much Oil in Barrels do China, India, Pakistan & Indonesia use? In a per-capita comparison they will be far off from US & many western European countries but I think their amount of barrels will be close to many European countries. And in the coming years they will probably be consuming far more … and US’s consumption can only go down from it’s current rate.

Ok here are some figures if people care to know:

For US:
U.S. petroleum consumption reached 19.7 million barrels per day, an all-time high, in 2001.

Of every 10 barrels of petroleum consumed in the United States, more than 4 barrels were consumed in the form of motor gasoline. The transportation sector alone accounted for two-thirds of all petroleum used in the United States.

To meet demand, crude oil and petroleum products were imported at the rate of 11.9 million barrels per day, while exports measured 1.0 million barrels per day.

Net imports of crude oil and petroleum products more than doubled from the 4.3 million barrels per day in 1985 to 10.9 million barrels per day in 2002. The five leading suppliers of petroleum to the United States that year were Canada, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Mexico, and Nigeria.

An average of 77.5 million barrels of petroleum per day were consumed in 2002, which means US consumes about 25~26% of the world's oil.

Another observation is that US only gets about 1/5 of the oil from Middle east. And kuwait & Iraq are not even big contributers.

Ok, I found this list Here which I think is pretty much up to date … though I think China surpassed Japan as being the second largest oil consumer. And I am sure India gained a few points as well.

Though the surprising ones the last one … Iran … ?? That doesn’t make sense.

ahmadjee, that is proof that Iran already have nuclear power.:)

These are 2001 numbers? It seems China has galloped much quicker than expected. The up to date numbers from China may be surprising.

Chanji, you are funny!

Faisal bhai, on the BP website it was stated that most of the oil consumption increase in 2002 came from Asia and Africa, with China leading the way with 60% increase.

So, if we take teh above numbers and stick in 60% increase it will make China's per day consumption to around 8 million barrels per day way ahead of Japan.

Japan actually has been decreasing its consumption, though it's not a reflection of it's recession but more so due to higher temperatures and better energy policy.

I am sure that at the rate China and India are growing now, in some years they will be consuming as much crude oil as the US? Where are they going to get the extra capacity from?

look at the per capita consumption it is very insignificant.

Give some credit to the Chinese and Indian consumers - they are getting richer fast not poorer. They will consume more and more over the coming years.

Energy crisis is something that might be the biggest news of this century as no one seems to have any quick fixes.

US does consume the most oil per capita, right next to Saudi Arabia where people use Oil as water but still it's bigger cities are not as choked for breathing air as some of the cities in the developing nations.

Anyway, the real test for supply and demand will come when China & India will be consuming 3-4 times more than what they are doing now. I suspect that to happen in the next 5-10 years.

And coal is the most pollutant of all the energy resources and the developing countries use it far more than the developed ones, with China leading the way. It's cheap and these countries are not as environmentally aware of the damages.

yeah at that rate pretty soon Middle East will be China and India's problem rather than US's.:)
