During a group discussion today, we drifted off and ended up talking about soy milk. A number of the group members stated how it’s bad for one’s health and not all that great as the ads make it out to be.
I was wondering if I could be provided with some information, so that I could share with someone whose hooked on it.
from what i've read. fermented soy products are ok (they are miso, tempeh, tamari etc)
first of all the soy milk we get in regular stores...brands like "SILK" and other regular brands (even some organic soymilks) have the ingredient "Carrageenan" in them...if u do a search on it you will find it is not so good for health.
Secondly how the soymilk has been manufactured (it is either made from soybeans or extracted from soy protein) if it is extracted from soy protein it is really bad for health from what i have read. Soy milk should ideally be made from Organic Soybeans.
Lastly some companies use genetically modified soybeans into their soymilk .....unless your ingredient list says Soymilk from non-GMO soybeans.....dont buy that.
As far as the disadvantages of soymillk are concerned other than the above....it is the presence of "isoflavones" in them that people debate.from what i've read...soymilk has high levels of isoflavones in it (its complicated...it has estrogen as well as anti-estrogen in it) some people argue that these isoflavones are not good for health (some say it causes men to look womanly) while others argue that isoflavones are very good for u (especially women....delayes menopause, give u good bones etc etc)
i read a recent study that anything that has soy pretending what it isnt (like soy milk for example) is not good for menopausal women. soy in it's original form is good 'nuff
