Looking for English Tafseers

I am looking for English tafseers of Quran for a 16 year old. The english translations of the Quran copies we have at home are a bit too shakespearen for him! So can you please recommend any easy-to-comprehend commentaries on the Quran?

Please also recommend some Islamic history books (in english) or any other books, videos, lectures that you think might help someone learn about Islam.

Regards

Re: Looking for English Tafseers

Get any good translation with footnotes. If you want to you can supplement contemporary versions either orientalists or may be this one Yahiya Emerick - The Holy Qur’an in Today’s English.

Yusuf Ali translation from what was IPCI, has footnotes. Get a good dictionary for him it is useful to get him to use scholarly skills in understanding archaic English as well while he reads the translations. Searching through footnotes and using dictionaries increases certain skills that will help him in life in general.

Otherwise there are good audio tafsirs by Muhammad Al-Shareef - Touched by an Angel

And various topical translations very deep ones useful for everyone - such as The Heart of the Qur’an Yasin by Shaykh Muhammad Al-Yaqoubi
