Long Silky Hair

It’s been always a Taboo, in my home anyway, for guys to have long hair.

I always considered it to be something inherited by the military history of my family but it turns out that it has religious grounds.

Anyway, I just wanted to open up a topic here to see if it has any cultural significance. And if so, then where did this notion come from?

Ahmad, in almost all cultures hair are associated wid wild nature, aggressive sexuality, man's virility and a wild state of mind...hairiness is a prominent feature of animals. And animals lives in a wild state outside society, which also explains why long hair is found on intellectuals, hippies, or others who live in a state of mind outside or in rebellion against a controlling or social regime. And short hair(military cut) or shaved head are used to express the idea of subordination, idea of living in a society in subordination to a disciplinary regime....

There is beautiful book named "Medusa's Hair" written by Gananath Obeyesekere in which he flirted wid Past, Present, panhuman psychological and psychobiological theories and symbolism attatched wid head hair in order to understand the meaning of long matted hair of srilankan female ecstaics....
And you will find it amazing that the most of the theories and symbolism(* past n present*) he dealt wid in this book is somehow linked wid man's sexuality......in most of the cultures the symbolic notions associated wid head hair, the human head is likened to a penis, head hair are likened to semen, long hair are expressive of sexualality unharnessed, short or tightly bound hair is expressive of sexual restraint and shaving of head on ritual occasions expresses the idea of celibacy or castration......:)

so next time when u go for a hair cut keep all that in mind that wid your hair style wot kind of personal statment u r conveying to others:--)

Naik,

If long hair are considered a symbol or rebellion or sexual aggressiveness what are your thoughts on having no hair at all? Not shaving it as a choice but not having it as of in baldness. I mean, how do bald men are suppose to show their rebellion or aggressiveness, if they may chose to do so?

Is the notion the opposite for the women? Having short hair, for a woman, is in some ways a symbol?

Tanhaa bhaijaan, shair bi kabhi kabhi khoob baat ker jate hein…like a shair says…

“She knows her man, and when you rant and swear
Can draw u to her wid a single hair”

or…

“Fair tresses man’s imperial race insnare,
and beauty draws us wid a single hair”

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/smile.gif

I mean, how do bald men are suppose to show their rebellion or aggressiveness, if they may chose to do so?

Ahmad, in “Much Ado About Nothing” Beatrice says, “He that hath a beard is more than a youth, and he that hath no beard is less than
a man”

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/biggrin.gif

and about the symbolism associated wid female hair, yes there is a slight difference…in female hair has been a ultimate token of femininity…woman’s crowning glory…the strength of her femininity…like in the quotes above the poet is telling us about the fraility of a single hair and yet its power to move males’ desire n luv:–)

and af for as short hair are concerned, that is a very recent concept…a byproduct of feminism, women challanaging men by cutting their hair short…
in some parts of the world it is accompanied wid the idea of homosexuality and sign of female masculinity but in most cases it has been a statement of egalitarianism wid men…

Munnay bhaijaan, if i am not wrong, with one of your nicks you claimed somewhere to be a humanities student. I am not sure if it was this nick or some other but its quiet surprising that u r not familiar wid this book. This book is used as a text not only
in courses like anthro of body but also in anthro of religion…and i am sure some other humanitarian diciplines must be using it as their text too…

anyways aap jaao galli mein gulli danda khelo ya kamasutra parho ya dekho…wesay kamasutra is used as a text in anthro of sexuality:–P

Wah Wah Naik behn , bohut khoob.

in my college days, I was always fond of English prose and Urdu poetry. But yes there were exceptions. Here is something that comes to my mind..

"Thy hue, dear pledge, is pure and bright
As in that well - remember'd night
When first thy mystic braid was wove,
And first my Agnes whisper'd love."

-----Sir Walter Scott

Then there is a poem on Amarantha's hair by Lovelace

Amarantha sweet and fair
Ah braid no more that shining hair
As my curious hand or eye
hoveing round thee, let it fly
.... etc.

This is fun. Thanks

They use a wig jinab.

http://www3.pak.org/gupshup/smilies/tongue.gif

It can be of different types - a useful one is money wig that makes the ‘some’ others to completely forget about the baldness. Some young actors/actresses marrying three times old people than their age is an example of this kind of wig.

thoRa difference yeh hai kay yeh wig unkay sur kay bajaye aqal par hoti hai

Thanks for quoting Sir Walter Scott. mujhay abhi tak khood yeh nahiN maloom kay yeh sahib shair thay ya sailor or both. I am saying that because there is a boat dedicated to his name in Loch Katrine that takes people around the lake.

Naik,

Thank you for you input. So if I get this right, those with long rebellious hair and a beard are the ones who are most masculine?

Usually the above feature match the Alabama football team fans, half of them are Road Runners or Red Necks.

Anyway, do you have any other ideas about what symbolism there is for a woman to be rebellious? If short hairs not necessarily do the trick!

Oh and what about the Africans who can't have long silky hair?! If they keep 'em long it will be more so of a bee hide then something masculine? Should they stick to beard, if they can grow some?

Khan Bhai,

I would day Wig is a cheap way of showing one’s youthfulness. Its kinda like those who do plastic surgery and get the skin from you know where, and put it on their face!

Based on personal experience I have to admit that balding guys are not necessarily any less virile…I mean rebellious…than those with long tresses.
