I'm not a scholar or anything but i've always been told (by Alima's) that the reason nail polish isn't allowed is because 1) the ingredients 2) you can't do wudhu or ghusl over it as it forms a barrier and prevents your nail from getting wet, also if u die whilst wearing nail polish, once the body goes cold it can't be removed by nail polish remover and has to be scraped off, in order for the ghusl to be valid. - I've heard of this second point from women who perform ghusl on the deceased too.
I've heard that you can also get peelable nail polish that doesn't require nail polish remover... don't knw what the ruling on tht would be...
We've been told not to grow long nails in Islam because dirt can accumulate under them, and cleanliness is half our faith.
Once again, i'm not a scholar, but i've heard about the nail polish issue from many other Alima's so yeah ALLAH knows best... hope this helps :)
