Pakistan diary: Sharif is silent

*By Imran Khan in Lahore
*

I had a feeling things might go askew.

I spent much of Friday standing in the blistering heat outside the farm residence of Nawaz Sharif, the leader of Pakistan’s largest opposition party, the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N).

We weren’t allowed in, of course. Apparently the former prime minister and champion of Pakistan’s sacked chief justice, Iftikhar Chaudhry, was busy with meetings.

It looked very nice from the outside, even with the massed members of the elite police force aiming assault rifles in our general direction. I was assured it was nothing personal.

I thought it strange that Sharif was not outside, selling his message of revolution to the gathered media. After all, this was a man with a country to rally.

He had spent the last few days traipsing around the Punjab and North West Frontier Province speaking eloquently about how Pakistan should rise up and support the sacked chief justice.

But just 24 hours before the “Long March” supporting that very call was due to reach Lahore, what did we get? Silence. A silence that was beginning to be noticed.

Quiet card

The press corps of Pakistan began to develop their own theories as to why the normally noisy Sharif was playing it quietly.

“It’s all over,” said one journalist. “Sharif has done the deal, the Long March will be cancelled and the Sharifs will once again rule Punjab.”

“No yaar [friend] … Sharif will march,” said another. “He has no choice.”

The ban on the Sharif brother’s work in political office led to the Long March

A shortish fellow with a limp and a camera attached to one eye chimed in: “This is all a drama for the Americans who really control our country. Sharif is just trying to scare them.”

I listened carefully to the idle talk. Some of it made sense, some of it plainly did not. I put it down to the heat and boredom.

It was a little after 5pm when the reports began to come in. Perhaps the conspiracy theories were not so conspiratorial after all.

“Sources say Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari offers to overturn governor’s rule”, one report said.

This was big, if true, and could spell the end of the Long March.

Sharif brothers ban

Quick history lesson: The supreme court in February upheld a ruling banning the Sharif brothers from political office.

Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif’s brother, at this time was chief minister of Pakistan’s most powerful province.

He was duly dethroned and a Zardari loyalist, Salman Taseer, given the job as the governor of the Punjab.

The Sharifs were reportedly furious, and put their support behind the lawyers’ movement - hence the Long March.

After that, the reports came in thick and fast. “The Long March will be cancelled”, one headline shouted from my screen. “Army Put Pressure on Zardari to do deal with Sharif”, read the news bulletin.

Zardari’s party spokesman weighed in: “No decision has been made on governor’s rule”.

At the time of writing this, what is really happening is somewhat confused.

We are expecting a reliable announcement on Saturday, but in my experience I would not bet the farm on it.

Whatever happens next, Friday’s episode reminds me of an old Pakistani joke: “Ask six politicians what the colour of the sun is and you will get 12 answers.”

Watch Aaj on Jump. I heard Aaj is also blocked in some cities. Can someone confirm that?

Re: Long March Coverage

^^ Long march was announced long before sharif's were disqualified. The statements;

"The ban on the Sharif brother's work in political office led to the Long March"

"The Sharifs were reportedly furious, and put their support behind the lawyers' movement - hence the Long March."

We should give lawyers a credit atleast this time when political parties were not involved in initially organising this protest. Nawaz joined in later.

Nawaz is spearheading a massive convoy and the police seems to be retreating upon its arrival at all places… Everyone has defied their house arrest, including Aitezaz.

Nawaz spearheading long march to Islamabad - GEO.tv

Nawaz spearheading long march to Islamabad Updated at: 1825 PST, Sunday, March 15, 2009

LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Mian Nawaz Sharif told Geo News on Sunday that he is leading the long march towards Islamabad from Lahore.

The long march comprises thousands of participants including lawyers, political workers and members of civil society.

Police tried to block the way of caravan led by Nawaz Sharif who came out of his house in spite of the government orders of detention served to him. However, the police retreated after a little while giving way to the caravan.

At GPO Road, clash broke out between enraged protesters and police which used heavy shelling to disperse the protestors.

The Nawaz-led caravan comprising party workers and people kept marching on, breaking all the hurdles erected on their way while scuffles between police and protesters continued.

Police deployment had been increased in Model Town where barbed wires were laid to block the roads. Police continued heavy shelling and baton charged marchers to thwart the long march, injuring many.

Nawaz Sharif spear-headed the long march along with flood of people, pushing ahead through barricades and hurdles. They crossed the Kalma Chowk where heavy contingents of police were deployed to stop the march. However, the police disappeared after a while.

The number of people participating in the long march kept building up steadily and the caravan of hundreds turned into thousands.

The police seemed to have changed its strategy and decided to retreat upon seeing the ocean of people approaching.

Re: Long March Coverage

Nawaz easily came out of his house arrest, thanks to the massive crowd sitting outside his residence.

Re: Long March Coverage

the ease with which he was "allowed" to come out of his house and lead the march
looks a bit odd

He was not under house arrest.

Re: Long March Coverage

MQM upto old dirty tricks again, claiming there were chants against Sindh, while the participants many of who came from Sindh deny it saying the praise was given by a guest to the public saying “Congratulations Lahoris! You have come out in a huge number, before the same kind of rallies used to come out of Karachi”, the reason for this praising remark was because it was often considered that residents of Lahore don’t come out to protest, etc.

Babar Ghouri (MQM) wetting his shalwar on the phone with Dr. Shahid Masood right now.

MQM shouldn’t stir up provincial racial hatred, it’s a dirty game and the end is not pretty. It might soon seen itself at odds with the public at-large, because a huge number of participants of the Lawyer’s March have come from Karachi and whole of Sindh. It’s a Pakistani moment, not a provincial one.

Babar Ghouri needs to clean the wax out of his ears, he’s hearing things. And his proof is that “he saw it on tv and it is recorded, thus becoming evidence”

MQM’s claim:

MQM urges govt to take notice of anti-Sindh slogans

The committee has sent the decision to its chief Altaf Hussain for the approval.

No slogans against Sindh in long march: Asma Jehangri

Updated at: 2330 PST, Sunday, March 15, 2009

KARACHI: Chairperson Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Asma Jehangir has said that no slogans were raised against Sindh province in the long march in Lahore.

Talking to Geo News, she said the government will have to restore the judges in any case.

Asma Jehangir said the politicians can now see to which direction the people are moving.

“Now the people will be satisfied only when the judges are restored,” she observed.

It seems that there is devil dance going on in this long march. Express news cover of long march led by Thug Nawaz. Nawaz and his supporters are throwing stones and showing all that they are not females but some are males too. I am sure that some from this forum might recognise themselves in this march. Please let us know if the Hero who is doing devil dance in this video clip and showing his manhood (red circle pointing him out) is any of die-hard supporters of Nawaz from this forum or not?
