Do people in our society shy away from long(er) engagements? How do you view long engagements?

A girl I know is engaged, but she will get married 4 years later after her BS Hons. Lots of people do this.

i think it would be necessary with 'wolf in sheep's clothing' type of people. if you are engaged to someone, it would be better to have a long engagement so you can be sure that they are really what they are showing themselves to be. anybody come across people like that? they're sweet in public and try to put up a fake image and then are totally different in private, that's what scares me the most.

the only issue with waiting 4 yrs is don't they get close? wouldn't it be a bit risky.....?

Unncessarily long 'engagements' need to be avoided. Meaning, there has to be very good and strong reason not to proceed with marriage.
One may start taking sweet time looking for job and keep running away looking for better person to marry instead.
Which is fine but why keep other person hanging?
It is very difficult to tell how long should one wait but common sense need to be used. Roughly, over a year is bit too much.
