London Met: Police restricts Altaf’s speeches

Finally a wise step has been taken!!

**ISLAMABAD: The London Metropolitan police Wednesday launched an investigation against Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain following complaints by hundreds of British and Pakistani citizens.
**
“Yes, we have started investigation against him on hundreds of complaints we have received,” metropolitan police spokesman Richard Jones told Dawn.com.
He said the police was in process of collecting evidence.
The London police have dispatched text of Hussain’s speech to the home department for translation in English.
“We would see what course of action should be taken once we get all the evidence,” said Jones.
Earlier in the day, British High Commissioner to Pakistan Adam Thomson told newsmen that the London police department had been “flooded” with complaints regarding Hussain’s statements.
“We are well aware of Altaf Hussain’s remarks immediately after the election. We received quite a number of representations on them. More to the point, the London Metropolitan Police have been flooded with complaints from both Pakistani and British citizens about those remarks,” said Thomson.
In a speech televised across various media channels Sunday night , Altaf Hussain demanded to seperate Karachi from the rest of Pakistan if the public mandate of his party was not acceptable to the ‘establishment.’ However, Hussain’s party later clarified saying it was taken out of context.
“What we say is that wherever somebody has a concern that hatred or violence is being incited, that one community or another is being turned against others, this should be reported to the police. And I know that they take such allegations very, very seriously indeed,” Thomson said.
He added that the London police was independent to investigate the complaints and was under no pressure from the UK government.
He, however, observed that Altaf had later denied making such statements.
“It may be that they were never said or they have been retracted. But as far as the United Kingdom is concerned, we have very strong laws which are enforced on that prohibit the incitement to violence or incitement of hatred. And we take these laws seriously.”
Responding to another query about extradition, the British High Commissioner said that that Pakistan and United Kingdom have no formal extradition treaty. He said that extradition “is complicated in the UK Pakistan case as there is no extradition treaty. It doesn’t make it impossible, but it does make it quite difficult.”

Where is the news of speech restriction?

Re: London Met: Police restricts Altaf’s speeches

London: London’s Metropolitan Police has imposed temporary restriction on the speeches of Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain, Saach.Tvreports.
Saach.Tvlearnt from credible sources that Metropolitan Police has written a letter to Pakistan Embassy and mentioned that Altaf Hussain cannot challenge the sovereignty and self-sufficiency of any country.
It is further stated in the letter that if Pakistani Embassy could submit video of Altaf Hussain as a proof to Metropolitan Police then strict action can be taken against him.
It is pertinent to mention that two days ago MQM Chief used unsuitable words for Pakistan during his speech and in reaction to his words hundreds of Pakistanis telephoned London Metropolitan Police and registered complaints against Altaf Hussain.

Police in London say they are investigating complaints against a UK-based Pakistani politician to see if he has violated UK law.

Altaf Hussain, leader of the MQM party that controls Karachi, addressed supporters from London last Sunday after Pakistan’s general elections.

In response to accusations of electoral fraud, he is alleged to have threatened his accusers with violence.

Mr Hussain says that his remarks were taken out of context.

London’s Metropolitan Police confirmed to the BBC that an investigation had been launched “following complaints concerning comments made in a broadcast” by Mr Hussain.

Since the mid-1980s, the MQM has won every poll it has contested in Karachi and it did so again in last Saturday’s general election.

But this time, it is facing strong and widespread allegations of rigging and electoral fraud.

Half a dozen smaller parties, led by former international cricketer Imran Khan’s Movement for Justice Party (PTI), have been holding rallies and sit-ins to demand a re-run in Karachi.

On Sunday, addressing party workers from London, Mr Hussain responded to the allegations by threatening protesters with violence, and suggesting that if his party’s mandate was tampered with, Karachi would have no choice but to separate from Pakistan.

Mr Hussain has since said that his remarks, which were broadcast on live TV, were taken out of context.
Possible prosecution

On Wednesday, the British High Commissioner in Pakistan, Adam Thomson, told a news conference that the UK took allegations of inciting hatred very seriously.

He said it was up to the police in London to determine whether Mr Hussain’s remarks violated British laws, and whether or not he could face prosecution.

The BBC’s Shahzeb Jillani in Karachi says that Mr Hussain effectively controls the city of 18 million people from his MQM headquarters in north London.

He has lived in the UK since 1991, saying his life would be at risk if he returned to Pakistan.

The MQM (Muttahida Qaumi Movement) is supported mainly by Muslim Urdu-speaking people whose families moved to Sindh province at the time of the partition of India in 1947.

Re: London Met: Police restricts Altaf’s speeches

**To MQM leader, Altaf Hussain, who has just finished a heated address:
**

I belong to a muhajir family. But despite every bit of support your party claims to offer us, I choose to distance myself from your speech, your politics and your mandate.

It makes no sense for you, the head of Karachi’s leading political party, to threaten segregating the city from the rest of the country if your mandate is not accepted.

It is even worse that you give this statement as a political leader claiming to facilitate the interests of Karachi. As you speak, thousands of the people you claim to represent, are lashing out against election rigging, and they blame the followers of your party for that corruption.

Whether MQM workers are responsible for the bulk of the rigging in Karachi or not, the rhetoric presented by you is unacceptable. It borders on pure absurdity. In a country struggling to heal existing divisions, do your threats to divide us further offer any hope? A few hours after 60 percent of the population put their safety in peril by stepping out to cast their ballot, do your words extend any solace to Karachi or the larger country?

In fact, when was the last time you stepped foot in Karachi, the city you claim to represent?
You threatened to slaughter peaceful Karachiites protesting rigging at Teen Talwar with swords, claiming that a single order by you is enough for the demise of hundreds of unarmed civilians.
You attempted to marginalize the protestors by labeling them “burgers” or “insafiyaans.” But, you make a mistake: You assume those not physically present at the protests stand behind you and your party when in fact, these protestors you oppose speak for ALL of us. Not a political party. Not an income class. They ask for justice and democratic rights and their demands have the backing of every educated inhabitant of the country.
These protests are a historic instance of the resilient, patient, unshakeable people of Pakistan, finally voicing their frustration against a system inherently skewed against the civilian, the voter, the ordinary man, the suppressed woman. These activists do not merely demand the victory of a particular political leader. They want a safer city. They wish for a just election. And they deserve to build a better life for their families and future generations.

Before threatening their lives, perhaps you could look into whether their complaints have any truth in them. Or, are you afraid of what you may find?

As a staunch Karachiite and a Pakistani, I have no qualms in saying no to your attempts to terrorize us. I stand for the people of Pakistan regardless of income class, political affiliation or any other distinction. You do not.

A Pakistani,

Areeba K.
