You do have to follow up by calling to the offices where you send your resumes.

go to Reeds, Office angels, Hays, Blue Arrow.. also visit the job centre personaly.. if you are jobless for some time and are on job seekers allownce they CAN refer you to some employers.

monster, itjoboard, jobserve, jobsite, cwjobs are the main sites that agencies and employer use
I used above jobs during my last job change, and had to change phone number due to response,
that's mainly for professional jobs.
for any jobs, mostly you have to visit them and hand them your CV for a response, they dont reply for electronic or posted CV's
