Man I came to UK with big hope 2 years ago. No I have my postgrad degree with honours from greenwich university and still not found a graduate job. my post study work visa expires in just over a year and now I am thinking if I should move to another city?? Friends have suggested Birmingham and Newcastle. I can even go to Scotland!!
Any one think it will be good idea moving from London as there is just too much competition in here?
I very well understand your situation and I see where you coming from. Atleast you are far more better than millions who you don't have jobs and would be more than willing to work as a "domestic staff". I would suggest to keep looking for another job locally or in other cities but don't leave this job until you have received final job offer. In this grimmer ecomony, you don't want to take chance of lossing what you already have.
Yaar I have been doing that for 4 months now! I clean the offices that I should be sitting in!! :-(
I am a post graduate and working as a domestic staff! cant even tell my parents what I do!
Its okay. Everyone has to start somewhere. Hazrat Yusuf (AS) started as a slave to rise to the Al-Aziz's pisition, the person who was in charge of the largest empire of the world at that time after firoun (pharaoh).
SO worry not, your day will come if you keep at it.
sou101, what type of rolls you want to aim for? how much response you are getting? are you getting interviews often?
what industry sector you are applying in?
tips for starter, you need to have wide area open as the jobs are getting scarce, keep your search across UK, I believe you dont have family here. by doing that you will be ahead of those who dont want to move.
other thing I can guess from your post, you are working not related to jobs you want to do. try getting a part time or even voluntary job related to jobs you aim for and add it to your CV!, any relevant experience goes a long way when CV's are short listed.
dont just focus on one type of job sector, think of other non related companies who also do the work you want to as their secondary functions.
have you explored any opportunity within your graduating uni for studentships? or assistant ship jobs within you career forcus?
are you applying directly? or only through agencies?
If you're finding it hard to find a job in london, which is the capital city of the country, then i doubt it would be any easier for you to find one outside london as london does have to most job opportunities. Alternatively what you could do is apply for jobs in other cities while your still in London and go up for interviews as and when you get them. If you succeed in landing yourself a job out of the city then move out. I dont see why you sould move out first then apply for jobs that would not be strategic planning as you may come back with nothing in your pocket!
^^ Very good advise! thanks. London is not as good as I thought it would be! :-(
Our media make it look soo good. I have not even made a single white friend!! My visa is running out but dont want to go back to pakistan! It will be soo embarrasing as my familly have spent lots of money on my degree and i come back empty handed! :-(
well there are still in jobs in london, but less compared to past times as th credit crunch bites. people with right skills are finding jobs! the field you have have masters, is not normally in technical skills which asian or foreign worker specialise in and fill the gaps in local employment.
i think for such field jobs locals have more chance getting it and being short listed.
yes u are right! I have been told at one interview that they want to employ long term and I said I will be happy but they said they cant get me a work permit! :-(
My post study visa is running out in 4 months time. still not sure what to do!!!?
