Londi (Slave girls) & Muslim Rulers

We Muslims believe that Islamic teachings are against slavery. There are numerous Ahadees for better treatment of slaves and at many places in Quran kaffara (expiation / compensation for a sin) is to free a slave.

Then why the concept of keeping londis (slave girls) rooted in Muslims and afterwards Muslim rulers kept hundreds of Londis in their harem?

Re: Londi (Slave girls) & Muslim Rulers

islam did not invent slavery, it was already there amongst Arabs and in fact in more extreme form. Kuffar used to kill, let alone torture their slaves for slight disobedience. Islam made it easier for slaves to have get more privileges, though did not eliminate the concept.

BTW, even modern world uses POWs as slaves, in fact worst than slaves. Look what happened in Guantanamo Bay

Re: Londi (Slave girls) & Muslim Rulers

Yes TLK Islam really taught us to treat slaves in a better way. As I earlier said Quran and teachings of the Prophet :saw2: encourages freeing slaves. Like Kaffara for not fasting, Tatheer (calling your wife equal to your relatives like mother, etc) was freeing slave.

As per some historical records, Prophet himself freed 63 slaves and his beloved wife Hazrat Ayesha freed 67 slaves and due to encouragement of his teachings, the Prophets Sahaba freed around 40,000 slaves.

But with the concept of Londis (mainly the girls/ women obtained as war booty), this encouragement to get rid of slavery in Muslims couldn’t work out.

Re: Londi (Slave girls) & Muslim Rulers

That is because Muslim men used every loophole they found in shariah to satisfy their hormones. 4 marriages, Londis ..etc

Re: Londi (Slave girls) & Muslim Rulers

You know very well it is not loophole it is there in Quran in black and white , clear cut permission to conjugate with slave girls.
Now what kind of slavery was permitted ? Apologists of Islam have restricted it to just prisoners of war. But I do not see any hadees or any Quranic prohibition for buying or selling of slaves or slavery being restricted to prisoners of war. This is the aspect of Islam I struggle with myself to justify.
If someone has some hadess against slave trade , I will be highly obliged to get my hands on it.

Re: Londi (Slave girls) & Muslim Rulers

I don't think there is an ayat or direct hadees for forbidding trade of slaves.

It is sometimes quoted that when Hazrat Fatima (RA) requested for a slave for her household works, the prophet refused to do so and encouraged her to perform her work by herself. The Prophet and his family also reported to perform their household work by themselves.
