In many instances in the Quran and Hadith, there are references for having a lock on your heart if you do certain actions. How would you know if your heart is “locked” and how would you open this lock if it is?

I think repentance can open lock and being firm in prayers
Too much Haram and distance from religion creates the lock

Humans are controlled by brain and not by heart.

by both. by mind means driven by logic and reason. by heart means driven by emotions and feelings, and from your soul etc.
the relationship bonds even with Allah are driven by heart. if not then they are soulless.
