Why is the army always missing from action with locals raise laskhars against taliban? If 300 talibs are surrounded from all sides, this should be easy for the army to lend a supporting hand. I hope they are and it’s just not being reported, but previous times, army has disappointed here.

Re: Local Lashkar cordon off 300 extremists in Dirbala
^^^Good, Pakistan Army needs to support them with ammunition only. Because those people would better know their own people and fellow villagers; and would get rid of the intruders and outsiders aka taliban.

Not when khariji elements are involved who will retaliate with more suicide bombings and demolish the lashkars through sheer brutality as they did before. Lashkars are a start but need to be backed up with more force, otherwise we will be back to square one. Local customs of pushtun warfare do not work against imported kharijis.

Its time to gloat that the country is not falling apart unlike what you chicken littles had to say. Its time to gloat because the tribal people, the very ones that you lot insult on a daily basis are fighting against the taliban, spoiling your little wet dream.
Simple facts of reality. The people of Pakistan do not support the Taliban. They are not crazy fundementalists and you have no idea what happens in Pakistan.
Oh yes, this is not the first time this has happened, but it is welcome nonetheless. They should be able to fight off these *******s efficiently.

Deobandis have been taken over by arab imported shaitani ideals which allow for random butchering and suiciding . They are the worst of the kharijis as said by Mahmood Khan Azhakzai.

Look at any survey poll from right after (or even before I guess) 2001. Taliban support was at a all time high. It has gone down now thankfully, but still exists. Khairijis will not be defeated overnight as they can still open operate due to sympathetic elements all over pakistan who believe in the cause of killing everyone not believing in their vision.

Right looking it like that, the Pakistani opinion of the Taliban in the 80s and the early 90s was high as well. Hell it goes for the US as well. Does that mean the US supports the Taliban?

PESHAWAR: The military sent helicopter gunships to a northwest region Tuesday to support armed villagers who have risen up against Taliban to avenge a deadly mosque blast, an official said.
Hundreds of tribesmen in Upper Dir district took up arms Saturday, a day after 38 people were killed in a mosque suicide bombing there, and have stormed villages where extremists are holed up killing 14 fighters, the army has said.
The militia — known locally as a lashkar — were on Tuesday surrounding Shatkas and Ghazigai villages, where militants are believed to be hiding.
Upper Dir borders Swat valley, the centre of a fierce six-week military offensive aimed at crushing a Taliban insurgency.
‘Lashkar men are positioned on surrounding mountains and keeping a vigil on the movement of Taliban militants,’ said a military official who did not want to be named as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
He said army helicopter gunships and artillery pounded suspected militant hideouts in Upper Dir, adding: ‘The shelling was in support of the lashkar.’
Pakistan’s government has in the past encouraged the formation of lashkar militias to help the official armed forces in their fight against militants, and say they want to build up and arm such community forces in the northwest.
Up to 1,200 villagers carrying firearms are reported to have taken on about 200 Taliban in a handful of remote Upper Dir hamlets.
Friday’s mosque bombing was the latest in a series of attacks on civilian and security targets — attacks widely seen as retribution by militants for a blistering offensive by the Pakistan army.
Right looking it like that, the Pakistani opinion of the Taliban in the 80s and the early 90s was high as well. Hell it goes for the US as well. Does that mean the US supports the Taliban?
They obviously DID support the taliban or at least the forefathers of the taliban through the ISI. They were able to let go of this because they don't have any religious feelings towards taliban. This has been much harder for pakistanis.
In case of US, Taliban was supported by a hand ful of policymakers who were in charge of foreign affairs. They don't have any problem in giving/withdrawing support as the situations demands, on the basis of US national interest percieved by them. The general public in US didn't give a damn about Pakistan one way or another they were only interested in defeating the Soviets.
On the other hand in Pakistan, Taliban have traditionally enjoyed some level of grassroots support from the general public. It is much more difficult to change general public opinion than that of policy makers. It requires sustained media campaign in the urdu/local press and other propaganda which we are doing.
As for arming lashkars , I am not so sure if its such a good idea. Of course we should definately turn people against the Taliban by the above mentioned means, but arming the local lashkars while giving short term dividends, in the long term can create problematic future scenarios. We shouldn't forget that we are having so many problems today because we pumped arms into the mujahidins during the 80's at the behest of US. Now some of those arms are being used againtst our jawans :(
Re: Local Lashkar cordon off 300 extremists in Dirbala
good news is at last some people of Pakistan seem to have woken up and joined the war on terror. Too bad obama seems reluctant to pursue it with full vigor
