Local, global, or astronomical?

Assalamo alaykum,

Although most of us go through this process on an annual basis, I thought I’d just review for the sake of learning. Here’s what I learned:

  1. Go local, unless there’s no Islamic committee who sights the moon in the region. That is because of Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) hadith:

Hadith: Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Fast when you see it (the new moon) and break your fast when you see it, and if it is cloudy then complete the number (of days – i.e., assume the month is thirty days).” (Agreed upon)

  1. Astronomical calculations cannot be a basis alone to commence or to end fasting. One still has to go by the local authority (ie. Some Islamic organization that looks for the moon). The following is the hadith that applies:

Hadith: Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Fast when you see it (the new moon) and break your fast when you see it, and if it is cloudy then complete the number (of days – i.e., assume the month is thirty days).” (Agreed upon)

  1. There are a few details where ijtihaad is permissible and this is not seen as breaking apart or destroying the unity.

I thought I’d post a fatwa below:

Ref: Why are the Muslims not united in their fasting?

The following are a few other links that I referred to:

He is living in Germany – should he fast with the European Islamic Society or with Saudi?

Do different times of moonrise matter, and what should Muslim communities in the West do

Can he break the fast following Saudi when the people of his country are still fasting?

It is not permissible to differ from the people of the city with regard to fasting and Eid

They live in Holland – with whom should they start fasting?
