PAL-C Launches “Stand Up for Pakistan!” Campaign
Urges Congress to be Fair
Washington, D.C., April 14, 2007: On February 4 2007, members of the Pakistani American Leadership Center (PAL-C) with support from the community launched a campaign to urge Members of the 110th Congress not to pass legislation (H.R. 1) that will block American aid to Pakistan.
Since, then PAL-C has been instrumental in persuading the U.S. Congress to re-think its decision to block aid to Pakistan. Due to PAL-C’s tireless efforts and constant activism, the U.S. Senate decided to remove all language on Pakistan from its version of the bill (S.4).
As the House of Representatives had approved the blocking of aid in its version and the Senate has visibly disagreed, a conference committee is now expected in which both chambers of Congress will try to reach a compromise. This committee will be made up of Senators as well as Representatives and the decision of the commitee will be final. Thus, we are now in the final stage to defend Pakistan.
Therefore, it is paramount that we do not give up now and continue the fight till the Conference Committee has removed all negative language from the final version of H.R. 1.
PAL-C is requesting the Pakistani American community and its friends to to write letters to the key players behind this battle (identified below) to demand that aid to Pakistan continues unhindered and that US-Pakistan relations be strengthened.
Once the members of the Conference Committee have been announced, PAL-C will update the community and request that you write a letter to those members too.
