Living Expenses in Pakistan

Don’t know where I should post to ask about this…

I’m considering a visiting faculty appointment in Pakistan (most likely in Lahore) and am wondering whether someone can help me with some estimates for living expenses. I haven’t been to Pakistan for over a decade so I have no idea what to expect.

Monthly Furnished studio apartment rental / (paying guest arrangement?) :

Monthly Utilities:

Food:

Transportation (Car rental (daily/weekly/monthly):

Anything else I’m forgetting:

All Suggestions/Tips/Advice appreciated. Thanks in advance for the help.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

There were a couple of threads with a similar discussion. It all comes down to what kind of lifestyle you want to lead. So maybe be more descriptive on what sort of place you want to live in, what area, what car, etc.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

LC, if they are offering anything less than 1 lakh a month, say no.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

Assuming you'd be eating out a lot, I'd say at least 15-20k a month for food. Transportation..keeping a car means at least 10-15k worth of fuel a month, add to that the cost of car rental which can be anywhere between 1000 to 2000 a day depending on the car. Using a rickshaw you'd be spending around 600-700 everyday. Utility bills for a single person would probably not exceed 10k a month. Don't know much about rental costs here.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

Stoppit, I'm hoping that someone here may be familiar with the needs and expectations of foreign professionals and may be able to provide a ballpark figure for various expenses.

TLK, I don't have specific quotes yet, but have a feeling that the offer will be around 1 to 1.25 lakh per month.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

Thanks... that's the kind of information I'm looking for.
For rentals, I've consulted some websites that seem to suggest that a studio apartment can run somewhere between 15K-20K per month depending on the location with areas like Defence being on the higher end. So, I'm budgeting around 25K for this.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

1) furnished apt .. no clue but lets say 30000
2) 5k electricity, 5k (gas, internet, water, cable, etc)
3) 500 daily = 15k food for a month
4) 20k per week (hertz pakistan) 24hr or daily pubic/private ride 500x30=15k month
5) 10k entertainment budget (eating out, movies, sheesha etc..)

6) 10k misc

80/90k at least a month.

if you were coming to Faisalabad, i can probably set you up with everything. but oh well ..

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

^ Why not negotiate a car/driver and housing as part of the compensation? Even if the housing is not in an area of your choosing, you can get a housing allowance to off-set your rental expenses and then move to an area you are comfortable with/prefer.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

At least 100k per month

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

Sehrysh... most of the opportunities are at public sector institutions and there's little room for negotiation due to the pre-defined criteria specified by the Govt. - the stipends, incidentals, and various allowances are rolled into one amount... at least that's what I've seen so far. I'm still waiting for responses - will see what they offer.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

That's what I think as well... around 100K is a fair estimate. Let's hope the offers exceed this amount.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

So out of curiosity, do Pakistani public unis offer foreign academics very many visiting faculty appointments or is it rare? Or more likely at a private uni in Pakistan?

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

^ I'm not entirely sure of the governance model for Universities in Pakistan, but those I'm applying to (due to my areas of expertise) seem to be a hybrid of public/private - they receive some support from the Govt. but also have the autonomy to run their own affairs (what programs / how much tuition etc.) - somewhat like the CDN model I suppose.

Their websites seem to suggest there are a few foreign faculty appointments (3 - 5) at many of these Universities... I'm guessing it depends on their needs and the combined funding available through their own budget and Govt. support.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

Nihari ka nashta every Saturday - Rs. 100 (?) :yummy:

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

if they are paying you above one lac then you could lead a very luxurious and comfortable life. I can't exactly give you the budget of all the things you mentioned but overall saying it can be pretty comfortable. Do you have family too or you'd be on your own?

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

i highly doubt it. luxurious in Pakistan on 100k? yeh right.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

its not rare, i personally knew two persons one at Shifa Medial College, Islamabad & 2nd one at National Textile University, Faisalabad.

there are three visiting professors from Norway & germany at Government College Uni, Faisalabad.

Re: Living Expenses in Pakistan

**above **100k and if he's on his own. it would be pretty good.
