0031: “I have put my £700 holiday fund on Murray to win in straight sets. Profit £250. My wife will divorce me if I lose it. Come on Andy.”
From jimmy, tottenham, via text****0026: Yikes. New year, same problem for Sharapova as she makes two double-faults on her way to 0-40 and soon drops serve for 1-1. The 2008 champion was unable to defend her title last year and while her groundstrokes have returned after that serious shoulder problem, the serve remains a worry. Still, Kirilenko’s form has been poor over the last year and a third break quickly follows.
Kopmatt09 on Twitter:](http://twitter.com/Kopmatt09)"Can the tennismatch the snooker excitementI doubt it. Come on murray, do a Selby!"padawanbeck84 on Twitter:](http://twitter.com/padawanbeck84)“With 606 closed for the day, I’d like to say a big “VAMOS RAFA!!” on behalf of all of the 606 Rafateers.”
0017: Sharapova gets the 2010 Aussie Open under way by breaking Kirilenko’s serve on Laver, while second seed Dinara Safina is in action against Magdalena Rybarikova on the evocatively named Hisense Arena. Otherwise, it’s rain stopped play, meaning Baltacha must wait for now.
0011: Must add that Murray v Anderson will be on 5 live as well as here and BBC2. At 0330 GMT. I’ll stop going on about that now. We begin with Sharapova v Kirilenko followed by Clijsters v Tetreault on Laver. And due to kick off first on Court Seven in Britain’s very own Elena Baltacha against Pauline Parmentier of France, the world number 105. Katie O’Brien plays Austrian Patricia Mayr, ranked 90th, in the third match on Court 10. All of this is weather permitting, which is not something I expected to be writing.
0009: “Day off work tomorrow. Gonna stay up all night watching the tennis. Hope my bets come in & it’s a good night.”
From Jim, yardley wood, birmingham via text****0009: “Just want to say good luck to andy murray in 4 hours, am missing sleep for ya.”
From Robin via text on 81111****0006: Maria Sharapova and fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko are out under the Rod Laver roof, swishing away at imaginary tennis balls as the umpire explains the new cramping rules. Basically, there will be less sympathy for it this year, which seems sensible.
5 live’s Jonathan Overend on Twitter:](http://twitter.com/SoCalHell)"This time last year it was about 42 degrees.. today it’s 20 tops. Roof closed after morning rain. Indoor tennis to start the GS year!"2357: After the US Open, I requested - in fact demanded - a glamorous assistant for the Aussie Open nights. I am joined by BBC Sport’s Chris Bevan. To take my mind off this, please get in touch through Twitter](http://twitter.com/piersnewbery)or send your **texts in to 81111 (UK) and +44 7786200666 (worldwide).**2352: The day one line-up is a belter, with big names everywhere you look, among them Andy Murray in his opening match against Kevin Anderson at around 0330 GMT on Rod Laver Arena. That will be covered game-by-game here, streamed at the top of this page, live on BBC2 and on the red button (UK only). The Scot has a tough draw but appears in confident mood.2350: Evening all, and welcome to day/night one of the Australian Open 2010. I’ve got a feeling this could be a good one. I’ll be here all night, with Caroline Cheese taking over for the distant night/morning session at 0800 GMT.
