Literature on the 'Great Split in Islam'

I was wondering if anyone could give me some links where I can find info on how the Great Split into Shia and Sunni took place and when it took place?

From all that I have read to date I can very much comprehend that the Muslims were united throughout the caliphate of Abu Bakr and in the early period of the caliphate of Umar.

But i want to read as much as I can so as to reach a fair judgement of what ACTUALLY happened…or maybe it is going to stay as the greatest mysteries of our time!
