Lip Care

So I think i have something that’s similar to a sunburn.. the corners of my mouth are raw and red and HURT. the skin is dry and flaky around there. I think it’s b/c I tried Carmex and turns out i’m allergic to it… so im allergic to Carmex, Blistex, Chapstick. I"m using vaseline these days to soothe it but its not working, ugh, any recommendations to help get over this, and for later care?

Re: Lip Care

Are you anaemic?? the reason i ask is because if you have a sore in the corner of your mouth, usually in both sides, you may have Angular Chelitis. This condition is not fatal, nor is it contagious, however the lesions in the corner of the mouth can be very uncomfortable. The lips split and ulcerate,… does it feel like paper cuts at the corners of the mouth and they’re crusty and have a whitish hue? This can be linked to a vitamin and mineral deficiency. Particularly a deficiency in iron, hence why i asked about anaemia… :hmmm:

Re: Lip Care

olive oil or butter? :bummer:

Re: Lip Care

Drink lots-o-water. Hydrate your body. Then go back to normal/sufficient water intake.

Re: Lip Care

You can try Eucerin's Aquaphor Healing Ointment available at Ulta/Walgreens...it helps with dryness and flakyness of skin. It's much better than vaseline!

Re: Lip Care

use neosporin...lip treatment
multivitamin (with zinc and iron)

and what in those products are you allergic to?

Re: Lip Care

Hey, that happened to my lips when I was in Pakistan and no amount of lip cream would fix it. So went to the Dr when I got back, and straight away he said its due to iron deficiency, probably bcos I didn’t consume red meat while there. A few iron pills later, and it was fixed. A miracle!

Re: Lip Care

Olive oil...can do wonders. And research is showing that it can help provide sun protection.

Gently massage olive oil on your lips.

Avoid licking and biting your lips. Your own saliva can irritate your lips.

There are other chapstick brands. Have you tried** Burt's Bees Beeswax lip** balm. It comes in balm form as well as chapstick form. And it contains peppermint which provides an instant cooling sensation to stinging/chapped lips. Similar to toothpaste but it moisturizes as well.

You can try Body Shop's vitamin C chapstick. It tastes like orange flavored candy. Contains vitamin C and sunblock.

When going out in the sun, apply chapstick that contains sunscreen.

Re: Lip Care

Glycerine works Sara..

Re: Lip Care

Can I PM u? :hmmm:

Good suggestion, and beneficial for pretty much everything. thanks for the reminder..

Its safe to use on lips?

I dont know man. I believe the major cause may have been the peppermint lipbalm i got from bath and bodyworks..that’s 2+ years old. As well as the liplnier from pakistan…also old. :smack:

I think i suffer from too much red meat than lack of it. :S

Chapstick the brand or any chapstick? I may just try your other suggestions..when it gets beter. believe me it looks okay but feels really bad, and hurts

Re: Lip Care

even if its cheilitis…it could have an underlying cause..like an allergy to some ingredient…? did u ever have dermatitis :hmmm:

id go with burts bee’s avoid that classic black chap stick brand. it gave me a lot of trouble .

Re: Lip Care

whats dermatititts?

Re: Lip Care

Lifeless has an excellent point. It is possible that you have cheilitis. It irritation that commonly takes place at the corners of your lips. It can be caused by lack of vitamin B (take your multivitamin) and keep well-hydrated…and a doctor told me that moisturizing it usually helps. So try Burt’s Bees. You can find it at your local grocery store or Ulta. Try the one with peppermint in it…the cools your skin (if youre okay with that).

Re: Lip Care

hmm actually this is quite new/recent, has never happened before. Normally the chapstick gives a very weird feeling to my lipline (kind of like an invisible lipliner).

and the mystery continues.

Re: Lip Care

Dry skin condition

Re: Lip Care

contact dermatitis could be like a reaction to a certain product....tiny tiny pimples/spots...redness...itching etc...the degree of it varies...

Re: Lip Care

Cheilitis is a treatable inflammation that occurs at the corners of the lips. Sometimes caused by deficiencies in iron, vitamin B, and Zinc. Here are a couple of links that can help.

Re: Lip Care

Yes, it is very safe for lips or any other part of the body…My dermatologist recommended it to me to use on lips. There’s some info about it here Eucerin

Re: Lip Care

chapstick is terrible on my lips too...it feels like i have something heavy on and it definitely does not moisturize. Try this...mix up sugar and olive oil to a gritty paste and rub your lips with that every morning to exfoliate them, wipe off with a towel and then rub a drop of olive oil or any emollient lip balm. drink lots water.

Re: Lip Care

Sara, first thing to do is go to your doc... like people have mentioned above, there could be an underlying cause. When we were younger, my sister used to get this on and off, and it was always to do with her iron levels.... but it could be something else for you, so check with the GP.

Secondly, the best thing to use on your lips is petroleum jelly i.e VASELINE!! i've said it so many times... the only things i've ever used on my lips to nourish is vaseline.....i don't believe in all these colourful fancy packaged lip balms and salves as they contain loads of crap... you could be having an allergic reaction to something like cocamidopropyl betaine.... so i suggect sticking to something pure like Vaseline... it has one ingredient only and it's my miracle worker... apply throughout the day, but really apply thickly at night to nourish and hydrate the area.

And try not to lick your lips... tempting but it'll make it worse... just thap on the vaseline :)
