Indian State of Gujarat is just across the border from Sindh, I was wondering if Lions/Tigers exist in parts of Sindh?

Ali, you might missed a recent debate in Sindh assembly, where Mehtab Akbar Rashidi said 'some decades ago, Sindh’s forests got lions, tigers, etc and now you can’t find sparrows and parrots.

Thanks for sharing. I had missed it. I was wondering as in India I believe both states bordering Sindh (Gujarat and Rajhastan) have lions, therefore it did not make sense for Sindh not to have them.
Re: Lions/Tigers in Sindh
Sindh is separated from Gujarat by swamplands, and then it is desert for a while. Lions live in forested grasslands, Tigers are from rainforests and have never lived in Sindh. Both need a lot of herbivorous wildlife to live off. Top order predators are not the easiest to sustain, unless everything else in the ecosystem is healthy.

Sindh and Punjab were famous for its large gainda population not so long ago. Babarnama mentions them. i doubt there are any left now.

no gaindas in the areas forming Pakistan.
Re: Lions/Tigers in Sindh
I doubt the bold line considering folklore and language of Sindh which got specific words for Lion ‘Sheehan’ and Tiger ‘Wagha’. Indus river is famously known as Sheehn Darya (lion river in Sindh). May be areas of Sindh near Rajashtan didn’t have lions, but there were forests on banks of river Indus, so we can’t deny existence of these animals in Sindh.
Re: Lions/Tigers in Sindh
thanks for sharing, interesting article
Re: Lions/Tigers in Sindh
pretty much all languages in asia have words for both lion and tiger, even if not native, lions and tigers are majestic enough to be famous as trophies for kings and folklore since forever. there are no lions anywhere in kerala, our forests are dense rainforests where tigers and leopards thrive, but lions need open grasslands and sparse forests. yet there are like 3-4 words just for lions in malayalam and are often in local fables.
Re: Lions/Tigers in Sindh
The article I posted above says that last lion of Sindh was killed near Kot Deji, Sindh in 1860s. (Though there are many kuttas claiming themselves Sher e Sindh now, but thats another topic
)
Now this Kot Deji and Kirthar Range are adjacent areas. Another article says that wild cats (including Leopards) are still found in Kirthar range.

oh I forgot him...he was a dangerous animal when he was younger,I dont think Punjab has seen a crueler ruler.
Re: Lions/Tigers in Sindh
I am impressed by how the ruler of chattisgarh knew of the importance of preserving the native animals in early 1900's, our rulers still dont under stand this.
