LinkedIn Profile

How many of you have active linkedin profiles? When I say active, I mean you update the status often, keep your job description and employer name current, get endorsements from peers and/or bosses etc. Did you ever get any interview invite on linkedin? How many industry contacts do you have? Share your overall experience with linkedin in terms of job hunt.

Re: LinkedIn Profile

I am taking a career break at the moment , but log in often into the linkedin account. mostly once a week.

Yes its extremely helpful because over time I have become part of closed , invitation only industry movers and shakers groups and its important to carry on taking part in discussions in those groups to keep up to date with the latest industry happenings, work trends etc ..

Obviously getting to know counterparts in other companies , is a huge plus point because often times they approach me directly to ask if I would be interested in a role in their company , so the plus point is that before the position gets advertised , you already get to know that an opportunity exists , you have a competitive edge right away.

Similarly, alot of times when I have gone for job interviews , its made an interesting conversation when contacts realize we know each other through linked in .. that sort of eases the interview environment into a friendly and relaxed business discussion.

But obviously this happens after spending years of carefully adding contacts and taking an active part in discussion groups. I dont add everyone to my list of contacts .. and I keep in touch with my contacts getting to know them more and more and keeping an eye on their career development etc ..

I dont update my status as much .. but during working days I used to .. its not facebook so you cant just write something off the top of your head .. you got to keep that professional image intact and ensure you are imparting some valuable knowledge to those reading your status or following your profile .

So yeah , thats my experience of using linkedin.

Re: LinkedIn Profile

I also use LinkedIn quite regularly not so much for job hunting, but more for general professional networking.

I have never used the "Status Update" or the "Like" function on LinkedIn because I don't feel they should be there on a professional networking website to begin with. It's not Facebook after all, as CB rightly said.

Re: LinkedIn Profile

Status updates on linkedin are generally related to job openings or if someone is looking to switch one etc. I don’t think there is any harm in that. Its not like anyone is going to post what they ate today on linkedin status anyway. :hypo:

Re: LinkedIn Profile

I’ve seen people use it in a very Facebook-ish way. Don’t really agree to that.

Re: LinkedIn Profile

You are right on that part.

Re: LinkedIn Profile

Not really, it can be very dangerous for one’s current employment if they start putting their job search details in the linkedin status bar :cb:

Mostly people use it to make meaningful statements regards work, meetings, clients, business news , political news etc .. new systems they might be using, new processes , legal changes etc ..

the status bar helps in engaging with the professional crowed in a good way ..
