Today, I went shopping with a friend and she ran into Neiman Marcus to look at some handbags she’s had her eye on. There were these Kate Spade handbags (mind you, I know very little about handbag shopping), and they were on sale 30 percent off - and the design she was looking at was coming to $84.
Here’s what I don’t understand. The design had nothing special about it, and if you want a bag with a cute design then you can pick one up easily for $20 (or even less especially if its a handbag that small).
Why buy a purse for 80 bucks? I fail to understand the logic. Her reasoning was… “Well, everyone has something they waste their time and money on - for many guys its sports - do you know how much guys will spend on tickets and t-shirts, etc related to their favorite sport? So why can’t I indulge on these?”
What the hell type of logic is that?
I’m sorry - I just stared on in disgust as she had the handbag rung up at the counter.
good God. if i’m not mistaken this kind of bullsiht spending is a serious sin for muslims as well as christians, isn’t it? I’m all for good quality, but wth???
..same reason because a person would want to buy 80-100 timberland/any other brand name when they can easily get the same style at Payless/some other shoe store.
We do it every day..what's so new if it's the handbag this time and not something else?
^ Well what is the difference in quality between this bag and some other handbag brand of lower price ... like CrazyHorse?
I bought two purses the other day - each for like 21 bucks. And even I thought it was expensive, except they came with wallets. And they're quite spacious. Nine West bags. Cheapest things I could find for that size.
And the quality is just fine.
So, if I paid 21 bucks for those - you can imagine how much this little thing is really worth.
She's agnostic. Or Atheist. Something or the other - she keeps jumping around on the issue. Regardless, this spending issue is something nonmuslims experience as well.
As a human being, regardless of what your faith is, how the hell can someone spend so much money on something that is obviously not worth that much.
I don't know who the hell this Kate Spade designer chic is, but I checked out her website, and its nothing unique. I would never pay so much for one whole purse. Especially when all that can fit in it is a chua (mouse).
well sum r "labelwh***" not THAT ur friend is one, but they like buyin desogner stuff n payin ridiculously for it for the sake of brandname..
reason being, it makes them feel better about themselves or they can afford it, or its a lil prize, or even compensation for things lackin :p
am i the only one who doesn't see what the big deal is. come on. everyone has hobbies and whatnot. Her's is buying expensive bags. What's wrong with that.
Well I wasn’t really commenting on her religion but the religious issue regarding spending sihtloads of money like that. Of course nonmuslims spend that kind of money too. Then again, it’s not really up to us to judge. I mean i’ll spend four dollars on a pint of Ben and Jerry’s rather than the cheap 99 cent ice cream, and some wud consider that a waste, no? But yeah. I think most fancy designers are just crap. They’re not even that great, only a few are worth the actual $$. I guess if you have htat kind of money to spend, the world is your candy store.

Pyari,
I live in NYC and here, as in most major cities, you can get knock-off designer hand bags. Kate Spade and Gucci are the two most copied designers. I have a couple fake Prada, Gucci and also real ones. I find the fake ones are sturdy, they've lasted a while with no real problems. But they're obviously not top quality in their build. Mostly it's all about name. I'm sure your friend feels that she needs to own a 'real' designer bag to feel important or special. For some people it's also a rush to know that they got a bargain on something they could otherwise not afford.
^ Its not genetics at all. My father came to this country as a single guy getting a college education with very little money. When he married my mom, they had like 2000-3000 dollars in savings. That's it. I grew up in a household where there was no such thing as excess luxury spending. And I'm all the happy for it, because when I see people act in such a frivolous manner - buying 80 dollar bags and considering it a "norm", that my blood gets really pumping.
There are too many better things that can be done with 80 dollars, especially when you have like 10 handbags already which you generally do not use.
Dude so I went to Macy's today, in Herald Square and I was browsing the purses. I knew I was in Macy's for too long when I thought that a teeny tiny kinda ugly Nine west purse for $59 was cheap (compared to the Doony and Burke, Gucci, Coach handbags there). And to tell ya the truth I think most designer bags are butt ugly. I got this really cute XOXO bag, that's normally $60 for 25 at a Pay-Half store, and believe me it's the exact same thing and it's really good quality. I don't think much of fashion is really worht the prices they charge.
