We all have our personal pet peeves and the one that drives me crazy and compelled me to post here is what I fondly call the bstrdization of the English language.
I get that language evolves over time and sometimes abbreviating words makes sense or is more convenient - but what is up with people who only write in short form or intentionally misspell words?
Examples (with translations):
“fink”- think
“dese” - these
"“beta” - better
“rytin” - writing
“wiv” - with
“gawjus” - gorgeous
These short forms are not that short - so it’s not as if the writer saved much work in terms of typing and it just makes it more difficult for the reader - especially if every other word is short form.
And added to that, while it’s bad enough to see the ruination of the language in written form - a while back a friend told me about a conversation she had with a schoolmate. The guy was getting up to leave and he said “burb”. She looked at him with a “HUH?!?” expression so he translated - “B-R-B - you know - be right back.”
So here’s your opportunity - comment on the ruination of the English language or share your own pet peeves!
^ I don’t mind that if one uses it occasionally. But i AGREE with you that it becomes a pet peeve for me when someone constantly uses such “replacements” in their writing…especially posts. It’s annoying to read “dat” instead of “that”. What makes it more irritating is when the person uses such “replacements” for common words. Example: “ma” for “my”…because common sight words are seen** often** in writing…which means that the reader will have to put up with seeing “dat” and “ma” and “dis” frequently throughout the post.
