Light colors for dark skin

Read in Neelam Ahmed Bashir’s book that her friend Salma Awan who herself is a writer don’t wear dark color due to her sanwli rangat. Salma was told by her mother in childhood ‘LaRki tumhara rung sanwla hai to shokh rungon se door rehna’. As per Neelam Bashir, she insisted her friend lot of times to wera dark colors like red, blue, but to no avail. She convinced that now your mother is no more, so she won’t be hurt if you don’t follow her instructions. She also told that in Africa, many ladies with more pakka color wear darker colors like orange without hesitation, but she was not convinced.

Have you heard this concept of light color clothes for dark skin people?

Why people in our part of world take these things so seriously like an order in some holy scripture?

Re: Light colors for dark skin

.
Africans wear too much dark n so much printed clothes
May b this is their tradition n culture n they wear it according to their tribes which is definitely not followed in our culture

I think light colors for tanned skin suits better than dark colors :hmmm:

Re: Light colors for dark skin

But I’ve seen Makranai and Balochi ladies wearing dark colors. On Manghopir’s Urs, Sheedi people wear dark green… But again these all races got link with Africa as per some theories and therefore the confidence

Re: Light colors for dark skin

People have all sorts of crazy fashion rules.

Re: Light colors for dark skin

I think light colors got entry in desi culture quite lately. During old times, when only desi cloth was weaved on charkha, there might not have been option to variety of colors. Technology is the culprit here.

Re: Light colors for dark skin

Yes, in the older generation the concept of light colors for dark skinned ppl is prevalent. But different colors suit different people. Maybe they feel the lighter the color, lighter the skin tone will appear but thats not true.
I have a sanwla/olive skin tone and grey & blue suit me the best. I try to stay away from yellow & orange.
Its not about being 'like an order in the holy scripture'. Its more of what you are convinced about for a long time and are comfy in. As change is uncomfortable for many.

Re: Light colors for dark skin

But if Condoleezza Rice can try black and Red, why a desi lady is in-comfortable in these colors?

Re: Light colors for dark skin

Its about what suits you. I would wear black and red happily. Orange and black would also be fine but only orange wouldn't.

Re: Light colors for dark skin

What makes you think “Desi” woman are unformtable wearing dark colours? South Asia is the land of colours! You just read a certain chapter from a book where lead character’s mother discouraged her from wearing dark colours and somehow you are under a strong imperssion that it must be a general set in stone rule?

People can have all sorts different taste when it comes to fashion and style.

Re: Light colors for dark skin

Its not limited to just one chapter of a random book. I’ve also observed this attitude in my family for girls with sanwli rangat, though they didn’t always follow the instructions religiously like Salma Awan.

Even popular literature and filmi poetry got some reference with this choice of colors… example being : Gori hai kaliyan to la de mujhe hari hari chooRiyan… as if kali kalaiyon wali ka hari chhooRiyna pehene ka dil nahin karta hoga :hehe:

Re: Light colors for dark skin

.
I think it differs for blackish or dark skin color n sanwla/light darkish color of the skin
So what suits a person also differs according to his looks/age/skin/body etc

I’ve seen Africans wearing too much dark green printed :bummer:
N wo unko bilkul b suit ni kr raa hota !

But in case of sanwala, I think printed na ho but simple dark colors chal jaega :stuck_out_tongue:

Re: Light colors for dark skin

We have this complex of skin color. Since sanwali rangat ones look darker in dark colors, so maybe that could be an issue for some. What is fair and lovely for? :hmmm:

Re: Light colors for dark skin

Fair and lovely for us “kaalay log” and sun tanning for goray log…

ajab dunya hay yeh… :hoonh:

Re: Light colors for dark skin

Only Fair & Lovely doesn’t work… Make-up does compensate and dark colors can then suit sanwli rangat. I liked the confidence of Shabana Azmi for trying all these yellow, orange , dark blue, colors after having proper make-up. She was confident enough to sit in parliament after getting her head shaved.

Re: Light colors for dark skin

i agree one should be confident enough…and thank Allah for what ever he has provided us. Do we want to say through our embarrassment that there was some defect in our creation?

Re: Light colors for dark skin

I am light skinned or pale rather, and I am often told (or I tell myself) that I should not wear really pastel colours, becasue I can easily look washed out. However, if I wear dark colours, my complexion shows more beautifully. Maybe if dark skinned ladies wear lighter shades, their complexion will reflect more, it’ll stand out more? It’s an interesting way of looking at it. I don’t if It’s a Sindhi fashion rule, but in our side of the country, it is generally recommended the ladies with deeper skin tones should wear more rich and warm colours.

Besides Pakistani climate is so hot, I doubt people in Pakistan enjoy wearing dark colours.
