It is promised by Allah that true Islam will prevail and the majority of the world will stop associating partners with Allah. It is also believed that Muslims will go astray spiritually, almost like the Jews, stone hearted and be promiscuous and then they will be saved by Hazrat Isa (as) and Imam Mahdi. Depending on whom you ask the story of this turn around of the Ummah from being the worst in world to triumph is different.
I only want to ask how humiliated and confused does the Ummah have to be before Allah will say enough is enough, and send down the saviors? Is there a threshold? What is your hope or prediction when will this downward spiral end? And is it anywhere in site?
One of my childhood friends always used to say that according to his maulvi sahib when humans will have communication with extraterrestrial life; those will truly be the days of Imam Mahdi. At least he had some idea or time line.

As for the appearance of Imam Mehdi. It is pretty figurative according ahadees.
Many ahadees summarize that Imam mehdi is going to be of Ahla-Bait. And on the death of a Khalifa in Madina. There is going to be quarrels among the brothers for khilaafat. A man then will flee from Madina to Makkah . And between Muqam-e-ibrahim and Hijr-e-Aswad some people will recongnize him as Hazrat Imam Mehdi as given in several Ahadees. Those people will bait on Hazrat IMAM Mehdi. After hearing this an army from syria or sudan (which are going to be under christian rule) will go towards Makkah. And at the point between Makkah and Madina a place know as Ammaq or Dabiq the whole army is going to swallowed by the earth. Only one person would be left alone to tell the story back to syria. On hearing this ullama’s of Iraq and all the adjacent muslim nations will come to makkah to bait Hazrat Imam Mehdi. and then from kurdistan(currently Afghanistan) an army with balck flags will start proceeding Makkah to bait at Hazrat Imam Mehdi and will not be stopped by anyone up till the reach jerusulum.
A man named suffyani whose uncle would be of qabila “banu qalb” will get an army of 80,000 to fight muslims . 1/3 of muslims will flee after 1 day of fight. Tauba of those will never be heared by Allah, 1/3 will be killed which are going to be the best of shuhada. 1/3 will be granted victory on the fourth day.
A sequence of victories for muslims will start ahead and on reaching Damscus it ll be 5-6 years after the appearnace of Hazrat Imam Mehdi. Then from within the army of muslims one of shyatten will raise voice that dajjal has appeared in yahudia ( currently in Iran). then upon hearing this rumour Hazrat Imam Mehdi will send 10 men who are going to the best of the moumeneen to clearify the rumour. Hazrat Mohammad (PBUH) said that i even know their names & their father names and the colour of their horses. When these 10 will appraoch Iraq the dajjal will appear apprently. He will have jewish followers and most of the women which will sum up to 70,000. then he will start fitna and Muslims will be confiscated inside Bait-al-Muqaddas. Those are going to be about 800 about 300 women and 500 men and led by Hazrat Imam Mehdi. At the time of fajar Hazrat Esa(A.s) will descend from heavens and offer prayer Behind Hazrat Imam Mehdi. and then set off to kill Dajjal.

If by “Islam will prevail” indicates people won’t associate partners with Allah but man go astray spiritually, really, what does it matter how many Gods people pray to? Is the end game to become spirtual beings or worship the divine being? The obsession with shirk puzzles me as it only serves to feed God’s ego rather than developing mans’ spirituality as this post and many others here seem to validate.

What most fail to realize is the fact the two are very closely related i.e. the spiritual development of man and belief in the Unity of God. Without one, other can not exist. Had it not been for belief in God, we would not have made it even this far.
If you only look at the state of the Muslim world 70 years ago and compare it to today, you’ll see that the downward spiral is over and we’re already in the recovery.

in any case, i think it is best when posting translations of the Qur’an that you put in parenthesis any substantive text that isn’t in the original Arabic lest someone mistakenly think those words are part of the Qur’an… for example, the first verse you quoted…
the words " the believers before you"… it doesn’t say “believers” in the Arabic text… it says only, “those before you”
the words “Prophet of the time” are not in the Qur’anic text which says only “the Messenger”
neither are the words “Then they were comforted with the good tidings” found in the Arabic…

Maddy, you sound as if political glory of ummah is the only reason for Messiah’s return. But even if it is, then you still haven't answered the question about when do you think the Messiah & Mehdi are to arrive?
AQ, it is great that you are being steadfast, kudos. But while you remain steadfast the only hope described in the Hadiths for the sorry state of Muslims is the Messiah & Mahdi ... so when in your opinion the Ummah will be deserving of the appearance of either one? And no it is not a trick question; I am looking for straight forward answers. Lajjo gave a simple answer; he awaits dajaal. Good for him.
A good number of Christians believe that the Messiah will not return unless all the tribes of Israel have a presence in the Holy land. "Moon can come crashing down but the son of god will not return unless all tribes are present in the Holy land" and so they fund for the migration of Jews to Israel. In any case, they do have a light at the end of the tunnel, knowing exactly when he is to return.
I have no idea. For all we know Islam could rise again into a great power before going into the slump before his return.
The most dangerous thing is apathy - sitting back and waiting for the mahdi to come and solve all our problems.
The Muslim world is slowly on a recovery from its past problems, its past weakness, and all that Muslims can do is pray it continues or even contribute towards that rise in whatever way we can or are willing to do.

Your question is very similar to the question people always asked Prophet:saw: about The Qiyamah. You have come up with the same logic. There are news given in Quran and hadeeth. When Quran talks about Qiyamah, it gives you the signs of it not the time of it.
When ahaadeeth talk about Mehdi:as:, they talk about the signs not the specific time. One of the signs was that there will be 30 imposters (dajjaalun sagheer) who will claim for prophethood.
The time seems very near as many of the signs are quite evident and many are still to come.
“They ask you about the Hour, when will its coming be? Say : its knowledge is only with my Lord. None will reveal it at its time save Him. [Its knowledge] is weighty upon the [inhabitants of the] heavens and the earth. It will not come to you except suddenly. They ask you as if you are well-informed about it. Say : Its knowledge is only with Allah, but most of mankind do not know.” [Qur’an, 7:187]
AQ, sure Allah knows everything but you mentioned the 30 imposters and some signs. So, please let me know on what count we are on the imposters and what signs are left.
