life flashing before my eyes

WOW!!! Yesterday I was on the LIE driving towards Mellville at the time when traffic was relatively light, which means that traffic was traveling at about 70MPH pace. On the left lane the driver in front of me took advantage of the empty road in front and decided to speed up. And of course I kept pace and so did a large cargo van behind me. Keep in mind that the space between that driver in front and myself was plenty. Then right after exit 26 the driver started slowing down but suddenly started braking hard. Reacting to the changing situation I also braked very hard and so much so that the brake pedal was pressed flat against the floor. But that was not enough to prevent a collision. In a moment of panic I pulled on the hand brake, which stopped my car inches from the person in front. At this point my heart was pumping so loud that I could hear it. But this is not the end of the story: I had forgotten about the guy in the back. A mili second later I heard a loud screech: the van behind me couldn’t maneuver anywhere and did not have enough space in front to come to a safe stop. Next thing I know that while braking he turned his wheel to the left causing van’s tail end to swing to the right. He did come to the full stop but part of his tail was hanging in the middle lane. For about 30 second both of just sat there contemplating the “What Ifs” while trying to gather collective composure. What if that guy couldn’t stop the car or didn’t have the mind set turn the wheel in order not to run into me head on? I might have become a decoration piece on the van’s grill. The guy in front of me had no reason to brake hard. He/she was probably just trying to get into an accident and collect on a settlement. who knows… I think someone’s (probably parents’) prayer saved me from what I think could have certainly ended in a fatal tragedy. Either his, his passenger’s or mine.

Re: life flashing before my eyes

We r most humbled that u lived to tell us the tale! Seriously, its a very good thing it all turned out ok.

Re: life flashing before my eyes

glad to hear that you were able to avoid a serious accident..and you are okay! :)

Re: life flashing before my eyes

Nice to know you are safe. Going forward try to maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you and behind you. You would ask how can I maintain safe distance between your vehicle and the one behind you , right ? So this buffer between your automobile and the one in front of you is safety zone in both the cases , that is if you decide to brake or the one in front of you brakes.

Re: life flashing before my eyes

Near tragic experiences like that make us very grateful for what we have today....

Good to know you're safe and sound. :)

Re: life flashing before my eyes

Glad to hear you’re alright man. And believe me when i say i know how you feel. Went through a similar ordeal some years ago.

Re: life flashing before my eyes

fallenPieta-- THIS ONLy HAPPENS ON LIE- omg thank god ur ok- but man ive encountered stupid and scary things on lie- im on that expressway everyday going from exit 68 all the way down to 41- and when it rains or snows ppl are so cautious that they forget how to drive- its so annoying-

but im glad ur ok- and just b careful and read safar dua before u start driving-

you know mate, when i was reading your post , I literally shivered ... had similar experience ... in dubai a few years back... two cars racing and zig zagging the tracks ... one ahead of me , one almost next to me ... before i knew, the one ahead pulled a sharp brake and i hit into it ..seconds later the car next to me hit me at high speed ....

3 cars glided .. mine in the middle ... and i ended up sideways in between the truck lane and the middle lane... and the minute i opened my eyes , I saw a huge lorry containing cement bars just two seconds away from me ... the drivers side ( me ) would get hit from the side ....

that second ... remains unforgettable till date ... I thought i was finished ... said my kalma and life flashed before my eyes ... i was so numb and given up hope of being alive ...

the lorry hit my car's engine and in the bid to save me the driver took a sharp turn and the lorry overturned .... i was safe !

I didnt know i was alive until some people pulled me out of the car and started the usual aid for shock !!! the minute i reached home , i couldnt stop hugging my family thanking god that i was seeing them yet again ....

Re: life flashing before my eyes

Alhamdulillah you are ok. I've had many 'near death experiences' in my previous line of work.. but you know, you learn from them, move on, and they make you a better person. :)

Yeah I agree. LIE has become just as bad as the Belt, Jackie Robinson, BQE. Actually I've done some stupid things myself like running a lady off the road onto the shoulder on the left lane because she would refuse to drive above 55. This happened a few weeks ago when I was on the Northern State going to Oakdale. Guy on the right was doing about 55, which is fine because he is on the right. But then this $%#%$@#% lady decided to switch from right to left but then refused to over the the guy on the right. This went on for about 2 miles and irked the S$%t out of me. So I switched to the right got as close as I could the the guy in the front and then started inching ever so close to the left lane. For the next 1/2 mile I tormented that woman until she started crying while my friend in the back seat kept yelling and cursing at her. I think that woman has lost all desire to drive a car. But it serves her right: drive slow if you want but remain away from the left lane where normal people can drive at a regular pace. I hope that wasn't you.

Re: life flashing before my eyes

^^^ totally agree- but then b careful also- i mean ur gonna do the crazy stuff to get into a lane and drive fast but i mean ur risking ur life- once i get on LIE i go straight to the HOV lane or the left lane- never do i stay in the right lane cuz its just a slow lane- but watch out bc cops need to meet their quota-every end of a month and there pulling over ppl BIG TIME and theyve raised their amounts u have to pay- so b careful!

p.s. LOL no it wasnt me hahah- i know how to drive- =) 6 yrs mashallah-
