If President Musharraf was suddenly no longer in power who would fill his void?
Shaukat Aziz? Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain? An Army General, a fundamentalist or other? What direction would the country go?

its happened before when zia died.
i would think it would be the leader of the senate who assumes the presidency.
Technically yes, the chairman takes over as President until elections are held. Do you believe that this transition would occur smoothly and there wouldn't be an attempted power grab by someone else?
My guess is that General Yusuf Khan (sp) will take over, unless someone tries the Zia scenario again, and wipes out the entire command corp.
Side note: utd do you have some inside info ;) for any such planned attack.

i doubt it, in the absence of a corps commander, which i think the president names, there isnt anyone prominent enough, to my knowledge to take control.
i guess the second general might be tempted. but most likely since his authority wouldnt be strong enough yet, the acting president is most likely to be the senate leader. wasim sajjad?
Why would the senate chairman take over?? The PM remains the chief executive and a new president will be chosen by the assembly. Now who would be the new prez ??
I think it would be a retd General if the PM is Ch sahib, or if the PM is Shaukat Aziz then some old has-been muppet like Leghari?

in the event of Musharraf's demise, by rule, the current Vice Chief of Army Staff General Muhammad Yousaf Khan (VCOAS) will take over the command and become the de facto ruler. Azizs and Shujaats and the like will be sidelined.
It will also benefit US if Mush and the Army generals like him stay in power rather than a chaotic situation with no clear leader.

I would have stated it as "It would benefit us"
rather than "I would benefit US" if i hadnt meant United States.
After Musharaf it should be Sharif & Bhutto that take up the President and PM positions respectively.
^ was that meant to be a sarcastic or mocking reply?
