You do not have to take another test for renewal...
But I think you have to go there in person...
It doesn't take that long...i got mine renewed last year and it took less than an hour...:)

You don't need a road test but a new pic and an eye exam. And it really does not take that long, like Chips said. I got done in half an hour last time I needed my license renewed.
the reason why they make you go there is mainly the eye-exam... there's alot of old foggies out there with cases of deteriorating vision and they put other drivers at risk when they are driving with such poor eye-sight. registration renewal on the other hand can easily be done online...

if its already expired than you will have to go inperson otherwise you can renew it online before it expires.... I was able to do mine online...
they will use the same picture....if you are happy with the current picture than do it online :)
Don’t do it - don’t subject yourself to the DMV if you can avoid it 
The DMV lives down to all of the stereptypes. I went to the DMV 6 times to transfer an out-of-country licence, spoke to the state director, provided all of the necessary paperwork, paid for the tests, and still walked away with no licence. And the answer I got was “Just because my colleague said you’ve got everything in order doesn’t mean that I have to accept your request - it’s not in the rulebook”.
Argh! I had to vent - I’ve never dealt with such incompetence in my life - and this thread provided the perfect forum!
