Licences of five cable operators cancelled
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has cancelled the licences of five cable TV operators for showing banned channels.
They include: Shabana Cable Network, Al-Murad Centre, Civil Quarters Road, Sheikhupura, Sabah Cable Network, Maqbool Road, Ichhra, Lahore, Marhaba Entertainment Cable Network, FB Area, Karachi, Welkan Cable Network, Islamabad and Danish Cable Network, Mithi, Tharparkar. All these cable operators have further been directed to stop relaying their operations failing which strict action as per relevant sections of Pemra Ordinance 2002 and rules made thereunder shall be taken against them.
A number of complaints about displaying and operating banned channels were being received by Pemra against these cable operators. Earlier, they were warned to desist from these violations and called upon to show cause as to why their licences should not be cancelled. However, these cable operators could not timely come up with cogent reasons to satisfy the authority. Hence their licences have been cancelled.
The Pemra has warned all cable TV operators in the country to stop violations of the terms and conditions of their licences including display of banned channels and relaying of indecent contents otherwise the defaulters will be dealt with as per Pemra rules and regulations and their licences would be withdrawn. http://www.jang.com.pk/thenews/aug2002-daily/08-08-2002/metro/i4.htm
